The box is a great ideal because

1. It's hidden under the pad so most thieves won't suspect it's there. Most are just smash and grab.

2. It's good for things like registration and such which has your address. And since we don't have home link most people have a garage opener somewhere. Put those 2 together.......

No I would not leave anything too important in there but it's there so that most thieves will steal other things and leave what's in the box overlooked or takes too long.

security is great, but the first place to get rifled through is probably the console... I would be open to other - more discreet locations. fire, nope, water, nope. tough, lockable, hidden, yup. --good luck & I'm glad you didn't give up on bringing product ideas to the consumer hoards! thnx

Another good location for such thing would be passenger rear panel but hard to get to even for the owner.

Idea #2: a lock box that fits into the tailgate whereby the carpet is hiding the box, flip the carpet up while open or closed and you see the lock box secured.

- how about something that mounts under the front dash on the drivers side? something that is thin enough to hold a gun and bolts into some existing holes, like right under the stock fuse panel. Would be a cool location for it maybe?

Interesting although it would need to attach from the same screw holes/screws as the existing panel under there. I have long legs so its tough to visualize until I'm sitting in the truck again.

- another idea is a replacement heavy duty stock glove box enclosure. Not sure if this is even possible but I know I have removed the stock glove box enclosure and it is flimsy at best. A plug and play heavy duty glovebox that can go in that space would be a neat addition!

I'm already a few hours down this path actually. It started when @scottryana suggested a gauge cluster in the glovebox but:
• This is not as cut and dry because of the weight of the Glovebox
• Need to paint it to match so that it doesn't stand out
• Locking mechanism means yet another key :flipoff2:
• Weight of the box is an issue unless counter balanced
• Edges would need to be rolled because of the proximity of several wiring harnesses

if someone wants to steal something from the truck, they will succeed no matter what - I'd rather keep the damage to a minimum than create more roadblocks for them and more damage to the truck

I have a softtop 40 - there is no such thing as security  - really, nothing has ever gone missing in 10 years that I didn't lose myself :meh: (like a gas tank cap )

Thats my thinking with the 60. I don't bother locking it anymore and don't even have a radio any more. The LX though is a different animal. I have too much in there worthy of theft.

For the lock, what about a combination camlock? Doesn't hide as easily, but doesn't need a key either. Or else you could sell it without locking hardware but with the Double-D cutout for a standard camlock and let people source whatever type of lock they want (keyed, buttons, combination).

Yeah sure, its all the same type of mounting hole so you would just remove the one mine came with. I do like that one you found because it also allows the locking to remain below the lid height making sure everything remains flush on top.

(For reference, this is the basic idea for what I am doing, not a true box just a locking lid.)

Interest because THAT is what I am planning for something else ;)

security is great, but the first place to get rifled through is probably the console...

Which is why I'm designing it to make sure the locking mechanism is flat on the lid and the entire top is flat so that this is on top and no one is the wiser: http://absolute-wits-end.com/80-series-land-cruiser-center-console-liner-lower/

Some of us that can't afford a wagongear tailgate setup might be able to afford yours.

Hey, just sayin...:poof:

1. We would need sticky tape to keep the fancy liner from sliding off in a casual rummaging of the console revealing the box...
2. What is the size difference from LX / LC?

1. Nope
2. Nope
3. Yep

I'd actually be in on this product. Love the idea if it being hidden.

@wearsabrowncoat the LX version has no choice. Maybe Glock 22/Sig P226 ish size wise. Definitely no 1911. The LC version has a larger console so could go nearly any handgun within reason. The Lock Box will be contoured to the console so overall only loosing about 3/16".

Good to know. I replaced my LX console with an LC version long ago.

I'm against the combo lock idea as I wouldn't like to fumble around in the bottom of the console trying to get the combo right with limited visibility. Many solutions exist from the simple (latching but non locking lid) to the ridiculously complex (biometrics like fingerprint or retinal scanners) but for my purposes, a key would be just fine.
