Since I'm still waiting for my Fire Extinguisher Mounts to come back from powder coating, and I'm bored....

Lock boxes are a weird purchase. They almost feel personal. These little boxes are supposed to be bolted down, sometimes hidden, and yet protect anything that is inside from common thieves.

Here is where I am so far. I'm about to get a few prototype made but wanted to get everyone's feedback and to make sure that if I make these, will folks actually purchase them. Reason I ask is because the other stuff I've been making hasn't exactly been flying out the doors but I don't want to give up making stuff. Something will click. :flipoff2:

I am NOT bothering with making it Fire-Resistant because in order to get it certified I'd have to pay way too much money. Hell no! Its a simple lock box.

So:
1. Does it need to be fire-resistant? If the truck is burning to the ground does it matter at that point?
2. Does it need to be water-tite? I'm thinking/hoping no because it makes things infinitely easier.
3. Is a simple tumbler key adequate enough? Anything else and the price sky-rockets.

The Wits' End Lock Box has been developed to fit snugly inside of the center console using existing bolts/nuts. Once installed, and with the use of the Wits' End Lower Console Liner, will look as though there is nothing further to look for. Hidden, clean and slick.

I'm making it from heavy 14gauge steel, felt walls and rubber mat to protect contents from damage. The size is big enough to fit most smaller sidearms or important papers or accessories like a watch, passport or phone. Includes two keys for the single keylock.

• Key lock (2 keys included)
• Hinged lid
• Foam rubber padded floor
• Bolts to existing bolts
• Scratch resistant powder coat finish
• Thick 14gauge steel wall construction
• 7.25" x 5.50" x 1.875" exterior dimensions (LX version)
• 74 Cu. In.
• All Steel construction
• 100% Made in America

1) Doesn't need to be fire resistant if I have a place to mount a fire extinguisher...
2) Water-tight would be nice, but yeah, thats tough, and it is already in the console. If the water gets that deep, there are bigger things to worry about.
3) The simple lock is enough as long as it is well-hidden with a Wits' End Lower Console Liner

I thinks it's a nice idea. I don't know if I would carry anything worth locking up beside the truck itself.

1) No
2) No
3) It needs to be secure enough, & large enough, to fit a compact size Glock but strong enough someone can't get in it while I'm in a restaurant eating dinner.

It'll be plenty strong. I'm going to add a small access hole to that you can slide a small mini-USB or Iphone 5 connector cable thru. I will also be including a leash so that even if someone were to decide to pry bar it, they better have some wire cutters as well.

I've had an ipod, iphone, cash and knife stole over the years. Just something to help because I've been way too trusting of people in the past.
I may be a minority here. I come the the Jeep world. I always left my doors unlocked so thieves wouldn't slash my top to get in. Kept all valuables out. Only kept old knives and such in it so no loss if lost.
Now if it fits a pistol then you got something. I always carry my lock box for this states that don't allow me to have a loaded pistol in the car. It seems like it would be legit for that purpose.

Yeah and I have quite a few other products that are nearing completion and need final input so quitting now would suuuuuuuck :p
I think your thought process on products will definitely carry over to other 4WD brands. I am glad you drive a 80 series.

Perfect size would fit a minimum of a phone, wallet, and full sized pistol.

@wearsabrowncoat the LX version has no choice. Maybe Glock 22/Sig P226 ish size wise. Definitely no 1911. The LC version has a larger console so could go nearly any handgun within reason. The Lock Box will be contoured to the console so overall only loosing about 3/16".

I personally wouldn't have a need for a lock box, but many might. However, if I did; I would think that if the truck were on fire, you'd be F'd...If the truck were under water, you'd also be F'd so questions 1 and 2 would=no.

What about using a combination lock ? I hate keys, they ket lost easy and it is a lot more convenient to just enter the combination and open the lid

That's my thinking but so many companies put a lot of money into making it water tight and fire resistant. And this is for portable solutions. I don't care about the certification because that's not my market.

Not sure what a combo lock price starts at, but the Simplex lock found on my Fort Knox pistol box is about the best there is for quick and reliable access.
