Has anyone done this? I've got a low mileage set of axles from a 95 80 series and want to use them on my 55 project. I'm running an H55 with split case. Will there be any alignment problems? Can I use my Aisin hubs I have from a 62 axle up front? Need to decide whether 62 or 80 axles pretty soon. Feedback por favor.......
The rear will work fine. It 's a good axle. It's wide for a 55 but still a decent choice to get width and disc brakes.
I would not use the front, and instead use a 62 front, with the axle (not wheel) spacers and custom inner shafts from LC wizard. I'd also use the 30 spline Longfields and 6 shooter knuckles. The widths would all be about right, and the axle would be plenty strong for almost anything you would want to do.
I am running FZJ80 axles under my FJ55. They are 8" wider then stock but can be mitigated with different wheels but you probably won't get them tucked back under the wheel wells.
You can use your hubs but if I remember correctly you need a spacer.

If the axle is from an early non abs 80, late standard late model land cruiser 40/60 or mini hubs will work. if it's an abs style 80, the birfs are longer and will either require the long style hubs (76-78) or will have to be cut and regrooved for the snap ring. (8mm gets cut off and a 3mm wide groove starts 5mm down = 16mm total to bottom from stock)
The front was not worth doing. I used a later model 55 front with 1.5" spacers and a 80 rear center section. I had a 70 series long spline axle for the locker, but I upgraded to Longfield inners with the long spline when I put Bobby's birfs in. I had a 4x4 Labs that I liked a lot, but switched to a regular hi-steer when I put the Howe ram on and 3 linked it.
I sold the front third. The mini guys love them.
I didn't spend 16 hours grinding brackets off. I used a plasma cutter.
It does have about 2 inches of stick out. I don't mind a bit on a trailered rig.
Although it would be better to have a wider front than rear.
Thanks for all the input guys....... Cool sh**t your all building out there.... Don't think I want that much more width that I had. Might just stick with the 62 axles and sell these or keep for another???? project.
Thanks again.....

that much wider? I didn't know they were 63" wide. Thats alot from 55" stock. I built mine dana 60's 60" wide i wish i would have bumped them out to 62". I'm going to make it up with wheel spacers.

I'm running 60 series rims that come with a ton of backspacing. I could run rims with less, although I would definitely need 16 or 17" rims to clear the calipers.
But I already hit the inner wheel well just a smidgen when flexed out. Just enough to scuff the paint.
