Well, I finally got the axle tore apart. The old chunky built-up grease is such a pain to clean! I plan to remove the third member to inspect it and change the base gasket on the axle housing.

Been silent due to the insane amount of time it takes to clean that old gunk. I also refinished the hubs and brake dust shields in black steelit. I’m just about ready to put it back together, just need to drop the third member and change the gasket.

Nice work. I know I have this job coming some day soon.
Thank you! It is pretty intimidating at first, but it gets easy when you break it down. I would imagine the bearing races in the hubs would be hard if you don't have a press, but you can definitely get it done without one 👍

Getting some parts off the floor and back onto the FJ40. Packed the wheel bearings with redline cv2 grease and used the original shims on top and bottom. A luggage weight tool hooked to a zip tie on the tie rod verified proper resistance on both knuckles.

I took a little break from the FJ40 and went up to the Sierra Nevadas. We camped out and hit Bald Mountain Trail before heading home. Our plan is to eventually take the FJ40 out along with the Tacoma and have some fun with both!
