That clamp looks lame. You would think that something with as vital a function as keeping your engine from blowing up, they’d put a little more thought into something that actually matches the job description.
I was thinking similar. Looks like a repurposed Chevy distributor hold down. Can the Toyota clamp be made to work or is the step on the distributor too big? May need to use 2 of the Chevy clamps? But trimmed/prettied up a little?

The collar should match the diameter of the dizzy above the step and rest evenly on it, so its not likely to break an ear off the flange. And that hangover tang on the opposite end is just an eyesore reminder of sloppy repurposing. :rolleyes:

Agreed, it certainly appears to be an afterthought. Obviously not for this application, the tab at the rear really needs to be sitting on block surface to act as a fulcrum. As it sits one would think it'd be doing a piss poor job of applying tension to the distributor. also it sits crooked and just looks janky. Surely has to be a better option?

It is a GM-esque hold down. The "step" is such that you need a longer bolt to work with the clamp.

What is the diameter of the lug at the base of your DUI distributor? This guy looked promising. Also this is what I was dismantling to get the pics, you're welcome.

@65swb45

The morale, welfare and support package arrived today.

Thanks Mark,

Looks like a book I'll keep on the nightstand. I did however notice, there were no anecdotal insights to the Zen art of Trans/T-case installation penned on the liner. 🙃

Those have not been formally codified.
1. Everything takes three times as long as you think it should.
2. Something often breaks before it unscrews/releases.
3. Fifty year old Japanese parts have an affinity for drawing blood from Americans!
4. Don’t panic if your old TC input gear is fused to the tailshaft; this happens a lot with the 16 spline tailshafts.

That’s the Readers Digest version.😉

Came to the shop after work to work on my 40 and kept staring at the junk 2f in the corner thinking about your dist. Holddown. Found a couple "spares" at work today so brought em home. I was stewing on this issue so I mocked up this little visual aide. Looks like you could slot the hole for a good 1/8" of further engagement if need be. Cardboard "distributor base" is 1.75" diameter (roughly).

That looks very promising!

I'm not in possession of a actual distributor to mock up with but just initial impression is that it looks a hell of alot better than the kit-supplied gm style. Can you confirm that my 1.75" guess is in the ballpark on actual distributor base size? Also, thickness if you can?

It’s hard to get a good measurement with it installed but I’d say it’s closer to 1.875” and total thickness with the gasket installed is .25”.
