My vacuum actuated front drive works great, but I want to restore the FD knob. Is it a bad idea to remove the cable?

You have to open that box up to get the cable out.

Disconnect the vacuum lines, remove the box from the fire wall and then split the box in order to get to the jamb screw retaining the cable into the box mechanism. Also, loosen the cable jamb nut while the vacuum box is still secured to the firewall.

Knob seems to be fused to the rod, no set screw and not threaded on. Same as my hand throttle cable. Would prefer to have knob face parallel when painting the F & D.

Are you saying I might F things up by removing it?

Thanks

No, I am talking about how to remove the cable assembly from the vacuum control box, so that you could work on the knob/cable assembly outside the vehicle.
