Fjfjfj / diff

Not sure about the part number but it seems to me I found that part through SOR and it was for the FJ25 DIFF. Sorry I can't be more help.

We had some time to work on the truck. Remounted all the brake parts and replaced all brake lines. Did a little test drive and the brakes work fine. No licence and insurance yet so it was only a drive around the block.

Rear wheels block earlier then front. I think this is normal because of the double acting rear cylinders?

We had some non free wheeling hubs of an old axle we had lying around. Decided to put those on.

Parking brake was not working very well, It was a bit greasy. Cleaned it up, adjusted, and it works fine now.

We are making some progress now to get a license for the car and get in on the road.

We went to the RDW last yesterday, the dutch instance where the car has to get licenced. They found a few points which need to be fixed before they say it is ok to get on the road.

  1. The front brakes are not equal left and right. One of them was greasy when we took it apart. Maybe we have to change one brakeshoe with the other side.
  2. They said too much play on a steering knuckle. it turned out to be play on the center arm. We took it apart yesterday evening, cleaned it all up, readjusted, and it is fine now.
  3. the left high beam stopped working. But it worked at home. Is probably caused by a little corrosion on the wiring block on the front inside fender.
  4. the front turn signals are not allowed to shine red rearwards. we will paint the inside of the lense; our turn signal isn't original anyway. When we will be going to original in the future we will have to go to amber lense front and rear.
  5. Rear reflectors are absent. We will get universal round adhesive reflectors on it for now.
Can someone tell me if, and where, reflectors are mounted originally?

thanks,

Paul.

As for reflectors, you will probably need a set of these:

You can buy the at CCOT

I highly recommend them.

Not on a cruiser before the 68 model. That was the first year the rear crossmember had reflectors. Before that it would have one where the reverse light is. 68 was also the first model year the reverse light waas standard. The one in the picture is off a 73 which was the only year that had the large reverse light. The reflectors mount on the tub pre 68 would of had a flange with a couple of mounting holes not studs off the back. Around 64 these were mounted in Japan and made by Koito. Before that they were mount here with reflectors made in the US.

Those are Stratolite reflectors, they wont line up with the stock holes on your rear crossmember. The ones from CCOT will bolt right on. Im sure the Stratolite will work, you just will need to get creative or drill holes for them.

 You would have remove the bumperettes and drill new holes in the cross member to move them in to make room for the reflectors. Then the 68-73 rear step would be needed which is smaller. Not sure these are Stratolite or another brand with a close sounding name. The Stratolites I've seen had a metal housing not aluminum. My 63 with a 62 production date has aluminum reflectors that look like these. Or should I say what was left of them looked like these.

So they should be on the body and I know how they look now. I go searching for those and will put on the adhesive ones for now. Thanks!

If you put the reflectors on the body, wouldn't your spare wheel interfere.

Here's a picture I stole from another thread

The FJ40 and FJ25 hard top only had one on the back left. The FJ25 soft which you pictured had two but none on the right side where spare tire mounted. Front reflectors weren't used until the 68 model.

Indeed the spare wheel is in the way. For now we solved it like this and we have to think for a better solution later.

I guess if you need reflectors to register it they are okay. On a restoration those are the things removed to make it correct. Can't tell about the right side but the tail light bracket on the left is backwards. It should be flipped over and bolted to the back of the crossmember. I thought this cruiser had the correct tail lights? I believe the front bib lights from the pre 70 FJ40 still available cheap from Toyota. Specter Offload did sell red lenses to fit these lights. Add a wire to light and you have the correct tail lights.

Using my phone and don't have really clear picture. Are those the correct tail lights?

here's our 62s reflector. does inspection require two reflectors?

did you bend up your own brake lines? or were you able to find stock in 9mm? also, i'm guessing the rubber brake lines are 9mm ends, but wondering if the clutch hose is the same? have you touched the clutch hose yet? i know the tube is larger

Yeah, the reflectors are just for registering. Will go to original later. thanks for the tip on the light brackets, we were thinking it was wrong way around. They both are. Taillights are new original ones (koito), the PO Gary mounted those.

Yes we need two reflectors for registering. Thanks for the picture, will go that way later.

We made our own brakelines. The tubenuts are 3/8 nuts cut back to M9x1 mm with 3/16 copper alloy brakeline. Master brake and clutch are M10x1 mm. Brake hoses male side are 11mm. We used the same brakeline for the clutch, didn't know it should be larger but works fine like this.

We've been to the RDW again today and now they said it was OK. We will receive the licence in a couple of weeks. Then we can finally drive it:steer:! (If there is no snow and SALT like there is now, I'm affraid the truck doesn't like salt;))

We will first drive it for a while and find out if there will be any issues which we have to deal with.

Are you able to get those classic dark blue licence plates?

The license arrived this week. We had licence plates made and did the first drive. Engine runs very good when hot. Shifting is fine.

We are missing some part between the windscreen frame and the roof, (we do have the metal part fjfjfj is looking for). I think there should be a thick rubber strip or so. Right now the rain (and snow) gets my face wet.

The seat was very close to the steering wheel. Was able to adjust it backwards: much better now. The drivers seat should be foldable I guess? Ours is welded together. Have to remake a part of the seat frame I think. Can someone make pics how it should look?

And we have quit a lot of steering wheel play (2-3 inches). That is terrible! If I understand correct this has to be adjusted with shims. Is that an easy fix? Do I need to add or remove shims? If I need to add, what size of shims I need?
