I got the front axle rebuilt using the IFS pickup hubs. I'll be using floating Tacoma rotors once I get the hubs ground down. It widened the front up a smidge. Just enough to look decent I think. Hopefully enough to kind of match the fzj80 full float rear.

great build thread! can't wait to take it on some local trails!

She'll be "ready". We need to do a little unofficial local cruiser meet up - if there is anyone else to meet up.

Do you still have that blue 80 that got all banged up at the fall crawl a couple years ago?

Got the e-brake all hooked up. The fzj80 cable is a direct bolt-in option. It is a little long so I had to route it along the underside of the body to take up the slack but it fit great.

I guess this post should have come before the e-brake, but I finally got the full floater in. I ended up removing three leaves in order to get the spring and shackle to sit at a reasonable angle.

I removed 1 overload leaf, the long add-a-leaf style leaf that is near the top of the heavy dakar pack, and I think the 3rd leaf up from the bottom. In the pictures it is sitting with the weight on the springs.

New track width. Not too wide.

And from the front. It doesn't look it, but the front with IFS hubs matches the rear almost perfectly.

Meaty full float hub and decent shackle angle. And terrible picture.

Welp. She moves again. I'm terrible at step-by-step writeups.

Ask for pictures of specific items, but here is a list of what was done this go around.

-Pulled two leaves from the rear OME Dakkar heavy leaf packs.
- Installed fzj80 rear full float with stock 3.73 fj60 gears and an Aussie Locker
- Rebuilt front axle with IFS hubs, Calipers, and Tacoma rotors.
- Installed fzj80 alloy wheels with 265/75r16 bfg KO2s. Not a fan of the black wheels, but that's the way they came.

Next step is to get an exhaust. Driving around with a straight pipe dumping out under my seat is embarassing/reminiscent of high school.

I should probably put the rear window back in but it's kind of nice without...

With the low wide stance I feel like it needs a v8 and some coilovers up front. this is what I dream of all day -

next is fj80 front radius arms?
looking good. the fzj80 rear wms should be 63", so if the IFS hubs bump out 1 1/2" each, you should be square. Looks like you could get away with relocating the rear spring hangers and dropping some tube into the drive shaft. might let the slack of the ebrake cable tell you how far back it can go...

Yeah. I would love to throw an entire 80 front end in the thing. And the rear definitely needs to be pushed back, but I didn't feel like fooling with it this time around. If I stumble across some 63" Chevy springs I'll probably do it then.

For now I want to drive it and fix all the little leaks that have magically appeared.

I also need to mess with my distributor curve/timing a little more. I recurved it and replaced the stop bushing but according to my timing light I'm not getting nearly enough mechanical advance. And I know my vacuum advance is toast. The motor will wind right up to 4grand though so maybe I should just leave it alone.... Tinker tinker tinker.

Been driving it a bit and everything seems to be working great. Fzj80 discs and IFS calipers up front with stock master feels ok to me and it stops really well.

I always forget how slow 60s are. Even after losing the ass-end it is still a dog.

I currently have a thrush welded muffler that ends right under the drivers seat and no cat. It's LOUD but has a good sound. I'm having a tailpipe put on tomorrow so hopefully that will quiet things down. If not, I'll throw a catalytic converter in the mix.

I need to put the rear window in and "finish" the interior and log some miles.

Do you only have IFS hubs up front? Your front track width should be 1" wider on both sides then the rear, Mine with 2" front spacers up front and 80 rear with no spacers tracks bad. Going from 1.25" to 2" helped but I really need to go another inch out on the front for it to be right, or narrow the rear which I don't want to do. However 3" spacers are more then I'm comfortable with for the amount of street time mine sees, how much do the IFS hubs widen the front? I'm thinking IFS hubs with 1" spacers might do the trick? Can you reuse your 60 series rotors? And the birfield stays the same right, it just moves the WMS further out on the hub body?

Thanks and sorry for the rambling

From what I've read the 80 axle is 63" and the front fj60 axle is 60". Here is a picture of the hub difference.

You can reuse the fj60 rotors and birfields and all the components of the front knuckle, but you have to do something in order to bolt them onto the backside of the IFS hubs I forget what that is.

I ordered some cheap Tacoma rotors from rock auto and used those OVER the lugs (sandwiched between the wheel and the hub) giving me an extra 1/4" on each side and a floating rotor. I then bolted IFS calipers (this wasn't necessary but my old calipers were leaking badly) onto the outside of the ears where it was originally mounted with some thick washers and everything lined up perfectly. There is a company that makes brackets to do this the reight way, but I have dreams of an 80 series front axle so I wasn't looking to dump anything extra into this one.

I would say the worst part was "machining" the hub down (for use with the Tacoma rotor). I used a torch first to get it close and then cleaned them up with a grinder.

Total, I think the front WMS was widened about 3". It drives really good. The steering is vague, but that may just be the way it with the longer shackles in front. I've driven this thing so little that I can't really remember what it felt like before all the work.

If you put 1" spacer on top of that on both sides it should theoretically track dead-on

For as much as I drive it I'm going to forego the spacer. That's one reason why I even bothers with the hubs. Personally, I would rather not have spacers. I've had them before and they were always on the back of my mind.

thanks for keeping everyone posted on you're build, The cruiser is looking awesome and wanted to know what you're final plans are for it? also guys i would love input on this idea i've been thinking about alot.... I would love to get a rusty 60 so I don't fell guilty cutting the back off, but i want to do a semi extend cab like blue cruiser, but extend the frame about a foot and a half and mount a load bed on it. alot like the 62 posted a couple pages back but have the bed a foot shorter so then the bed is only 6ft. this idea came from wanting a cruiser pickup but not having the funds to import a 75 or have a body imported and transplanted on a 80 frame. thanks for any ideas and tips with this dream of mine. sorry i dont mean to butt in on this awesome thread but figured it was a good place to ask this question.

Well I sold the thing to fund another project, but I think your idea sounds great!!. Extending the frame would be very easy as it is all straight channel in the rear. You would definitely want to move the wheel base back which would also be easy if you used some 63" chevy springs.

Good luck and make sure to keep us posted when you get started!
