Is the amount of money I can afford to spend on paint and body work. My 71 FJ40 has minimal rust but has in excess of 30 between 1/4" and 1/2" holes drilled in tub, doors, dash and body. What could I get done for about this dollar amount. Could I expect to get a decent paint job with body work? I have pics if needed rust about the size of 2 quarters in the left rear rounded area. Drivers side rocker bent inward slightly. That's about it. Would like it painted in and out also under hood. Want sheet metal repaired with metal , not filler.

Welcome.

You are going to have better luck with this going to a local body shop, and talking to them about what you want done, and your timeframe, and then seeing what they tell you...I would not lead with " I have five grand and want this, this, this, this, this, and this done. "

You are looking at some labor-intensive work man...you might get lucky and find a shop that wants to get after it...and you may not, depending again on your area. Crash work, billing insurance companies is far easier than messing with a 30+ year old truck...

Good luck!

The shop that painted my current 40 said they would never do another. And they are a real small mom and pop shop. I ride dirt bikes with the two brothers that do all the work. They said they had no idea how much hand sanding was required and how many small stupid pieces to prep paint and clear. Plus they took 6 months to do it. It had 150 more miles on it when I got it back because all they did was move it out of their way. It was a real PIA not to mention I paid dearly for the experience.

I never told them but they were the only place that would do it. I just got lucky that they were willing to do it to the standards I wanted.

I know two other people that are currently involved in litigation on bad situations with body shops. One is suing because they did crappy work and the other because they got it 1/3 done and didn't touch it for 9 months. He had to pay for the work completed just to get it out to take it someplace else. And the next place sat on it for 6 months. Sorry for the gloom and doom. I hope your experience is different. It must be all the fumes they inhale.

Well, how about diggin into it a bit yourself.... I'm sure any body shop would be happy to work with it if you pulled it all apart and did some of the prep work, then put it back together after they paint it. That would save you a ton of cash and "expensive" time, and allow you to spend more on the paint and quiality of finish.

Mikealeus;

I have at least $5000 in my FJ40 body work. CCOT panels etc. Hopefully u can find a body shop that will take on the challenge. Mine was in the shop for 3 months. The rear end of FJ40's is complex.

See the Garage under my user name for pictures of what was done.

And WELCOME to MUD!!!

I agree 100%

Not trying to say you are doing this but.....

Crash work..
#1 Always pays.. and on time....
#2 always pay what my time is worth...
#3 No rust/ P.O. "repairs" to fix..
#4 part it replace is as far as the dealership..
#5 it isnt 30+ years old.....

Custom work.. (anything not paid by insuance/ dealership.. )

1# never wants to pay what my time is worth...
2# nickle and dimes work to not make it 100% right
3# wants to pay maaco prices and wants Foose quality
4# Rust and PO work to fix (house paint or a patch repair with laquer are my favorites...)
5# Time it spends in shop or in storage.. Insurance has the 5K in a check that day amd wants the car done yesterday... Custom work pays 200-500 a month and it sits in storage the other 29 days of the month...

thers more reasons to.. just thought i would give example of why we are that way....

Man In had my old 81 GMC painted in 1990 and it took 6!!! weeks. And then I took it back about 10 times to get the paint fixed!! When my Criuser needed a paint job, I did everything myself, sanding, filling, priming, bodywork. Turned out smokin and if it wsn't right there was nobody to bitch at cept me. The learning curve on stuff like this can be steep, but job satisfaction?........Priceless.

I found an old semi retired body shop owner that lives near me. He said he would spray everything I brought him. If it was preped correctly. It would still be too expensive for me. So last week I bought a welder. I will fix all of the metal, build a spray booth and do it myself. After the paint is on I figure I will have about $1600 in body work and paint. Check out www.paintucation.com I bought one of their dvd's on auto body repair and paint. Good luck

I paid around the same amount with some rust repair and body work. I got a 10 foot paint job (looks good from 10 feet). But that was what I was after. I mainly wanted teh rust taken care of as I will just scratch it up some more later.
Where are you located?

Earl Scheib did a fine job on my '73 FJ40 for $900.00. That was a little filler (they even left the news paper they shoved in the holes) and two-tone paint.

I'm looking at doing the prep (sanding, filler minor dent repair ) and I got a buddy with a garage paint booth that'll shoot it for me . Right now I'm battling corrosion. I want to get it sealed top and bottom.

Pete,

I'm in Redding, Ca. and am willing to travel if I have to.

I will be getting my '73 painted and all dameage on the body fixed. Also all new hardware, etc. My quote was $12,000 plus it will take 4 - 6 months. This is for a frame off paint job, fixing everything by a guy that knows what he is doing and has done countless restos.

after a truck hit my parked 40, my insurance guy told me that they normally don't let owners do the work, but since I would most likely not find a shop that would touch it, they gave me a check. Hello arb lockers. :grinpimp:

I finally started in on the body panels. Check out my build thread in my sig. Just need to touch up the body work and paint. I have been at it for a few months now.
