So my buddy just bought a carbed single cab, 5/85 IFS. Something is fishy. How do I tell if there has been a frame swap or vin swap? The underhood has federal smog stickers not California where we are from. Also, no smog pump, newer style valve cover and newer style alternator with the IC regulator.

I wouldn't necessarily be surprised if it's factory. Lots of crazy things like this have been mentioned previously. I'd take the VIN to a dealer parts department ask them to look up certain parts based on the VIN.

Either is't an IFS frame swap or the manf. date was late enough for it to be IFS

Two wheel drive would have been IFS. Run the vin on the frame. It should match any badging on the cab.

Are you sure it's 4WD?

Valve cover and alternator changed in 8/84.

Check the VIN number on the frame (stamped into the frame, pass side, just behind front wheel), see if it matches the cab VINs on the door jamb, base of windshield, and firewall tags.

4WD Mini trucks were not soiled by IFS until September 1985 production. 2WD mini trucks are all IFS.

100% 4wd. No doubt. Totally forgot about the frame vin, good call. The dealership ran the vin and nothing for IFS came up. I'm thinking someone did a cab swap. Just to re cap, vins are located on door jam, windshield (dash), firewall and frame?

Could also be a laundered VIN.

Approach with caution.
