I took the daughters 4 runner out for a bit today to check out the 4WD (recent purchase)...
Its the mech. linkage (95 year), clicked it in and nothing happened. If FEELS like it engaging, but its not actually IN 4WD. There is no indicator light that goes on either.
I shifted into 4L...I get the low gearing, but again, I dont think that its kicking in. I ramped up a dirt pile in low low, and she couldnt climb it. both front wheels were planted, the PS rear was off the ground and spinning. No 4WD
Am I missing something on how to engage 4 wheel?
Its a 95 4runner, V6 with manual trans.
Is there an actuator that could be out or something?

Any ideas would be helpful!

thanks,

Chicago

It probably has an ADD front axle, which is a vacuum actuated sleeve that engages the drivers side front axle shaft. Pull the brush guard and make sure that the 2 vacuum lines going to the front axle are hooked up. If so, try to pull them off and see if they are getting vacuum. One gets vacuum to engage and the other gets vacuum to disengage. Don't mix them up! Then report back!

^ Best advise. Might have a bad vac line. If so, you can always replace it/them or switch to manual hubs but lose the shift-on-the-fly.

Could be the 4WD switch on the side of the transfer that engages the ADD.

Could be the VSV solenoids on the inner fender that sends the vacuum down to the front axle.

Could be the vacuum hoses that go from the intake to the VSVs and down to the front axle.

Could be the dashpot on the front axle that converts the vacuum to mechanical force to slide the sleeve on the front axle.

Could be the sleeve inside the front diff that engages the axle.

Could be one of the drive flanges has worn out the splines (doubtful).

Now you see why we hate that silly ADD system...

RIGHT ON!
Thanks for the input gents!
So it sounds as if the engagement is vacuum actuated similar to that on the FJ62?
There is a tube that is sort of dangling under the rig toward the PS. I dont have the rig here right now, but Ill definitely START with looking at the hose!

Just wanted to let you guyz know..
I tracked down the 4WD issue!:bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2:
It turned out to be one of the vacuum lines had MELTED against the manifold.
I discovered that when I shifted into 4WD, the front shaft engaged. So that sort of narrowed down my search to the front diff. I blew through the hoses, one had resistance, the other didnt...I pulled em and found it. 10 min repair and Im a HERO to the wife and daughter!

Thought id post up the results!
