4th gear & under load, feels like the 2F's binding

I just replace my oil & filter last weekend and I always check for stuff in the oil. It appeared no different that other times, just dark used oil but no apparent sparkles. It has really good oil pressure, so say's the gauge. I haven't really pushed the engine too hard, and this situation has only happened four times. When it happens, I'm quick to down shift from 4th to 3rd once I feel it binding or lugging......But at an idle, the 2F sounds great!

As soon as I get some time to wrench on it, I've got some items to address. Thus, I'll start using the process of elimination before making any rash/rush to judgment.
Good, sounds like you might have it figured out:clap:

Tracing how the fuel system vents, mine had a clogged check valve just past the fuel separator. Replaced it, and no problems since.

I need to pull the fuel fill cover plates and check that...

Geeze GA, get that dizzy installed already. I am so tickled at how mine runs with the TH carb and electronic distributor I can't believe it. This thing starts and idles impressively. I still have a tad bit of hesitation on acceleration but I'm looking for that sweet spot.

x2^^ throw that trollhole in already. you might be hearing the pop coming through the dizzy gas filter on the inside firewall below the glove box. my full trollhole setup is killer. very happy.

Thanks! The Trollhole will go in this week.

Kid - my '77 has the points dizzy, so no venting for it. But it could have been thru the carb, being it was sucking air thru the dizzy cap and not creating a vacuum for the advancer. I guess having the EGR Cut port (basically) open to atmosphere isn't a good thing!!!!! ;)

I couldn't stand my 40 just sitting in the basement, so I installed a new air filter, capped the EGR Cut Port on the carb and drove it around. Had to get my cruiser fix!...Ok, I'm good now. Will make the dizzy changes here soon and report back.

I had a hesitation issue the THC carb at first - turned out some very fine dirt got in the accelerator pump , quick cleaning solved that . Drives like it's fuel injection ....

Fuel injected, tractor motor? :hillbilly:

Yep, when I put my THC on while the good doctor rebuilt the Aisan, it was a nice replacement carb with some pep! I actually have my THC tapped for the '77 fuel return line. I didn't like my return line just hanging there unattached.

Not sure if mine will do 80 and probably won't find out anytime soon. Mechanically it will do 70 pretty easily but the old bones don't like it. 60 is fine but the Cruiser and I kinda like 55.

And that's why I use the back roads here in GA and stay off the (70MPH) interstates with mine....No need for granny to come whizzing by in her Buick and giving me the introduction MUD sign! :flipoff2:

Yup, plenty of ways to get around here in rural WA state.

"I don't always use the Interstate but when I do...............:flipoff2:"

One of the towns that I frequent for shopping and work becomes an interesting trip home going West - seems late in the day and especially on Friday the traffic really hits the skinny pedal and state patrol doesn't seem to mind a bit , at times they are running right at 80 in a posted 70 zone . Almost a sort of "race to get home first" thing I guess . I do get some odd stares when I pass folks @75+ in the old war horse - most likely from the flat fenders , large tires and basically straight-through exhaust pipe with the ol' 2F screaming away . The dumb thing actually feels just as stable as the Taco at those speeds and can nearly out-brake it if needed other than the rears trying to lock a bit - they occasionally have a bottleneck and everyone brake checks pretty hard . This has also resulted in some rear ending accidents when someone isn't paying attention - I've had to avoid some roadblocks a couple of times and the Cruiser handles it very well . Taco , not so much and it's getting the front brakes upgraded as soon as I can afford it . I suppose it's my backround of being a mechanic and working on so many types of vehicles - no such thing as a compromise in performance and I keep my trucks in top tune for driveability . Just need to work on the doors and hard top this summer to stop all the damned rattles ...

I hear ya!....I was on the interstate a while back, which is obviously uncommon for me, but I was roll'n my 33's somewhere well over 60mph and passed an M3....I could only chuckle inside! I think the lady was texting or something?

Anyone want some action/non-action, come visit the ATL and take 75N (or 75S) after 3PM on a Friday afternoon.....When you have made it 40 miles outside the city by Satruday morning (so it seems), you'll be a happy camper. :D.....Or test your skills on the ATL Autobahn - I-285 between 9AM & 4PM, which rings around Atlanta. If your vehicle doesn't hit speeds of 65 plus, don't even get on the thing. The slow lane is for 70MPH, the other 4 inner lanes, is take your pick and hammer down.

After 3 hours of wrenching....finally got the new dizzy in and running. I will set the timing & idle tonight.

Why 3 hours, you ask? I'm slow! Well, not really. But I'm too methodical to do anything quick when it comes to electrical stuff. Old dizzy came out rather easily, 10 minutes at most. Now is when the fun began. Installed the new dizzy, it looked to be a tooth off compared to the photos of the old location. Finally got it where I thought was right, push the rig out of the basement, and tried to fire it up. It hit, but no oil pressure, so I quickly shut it down, maybe 5 seconds at most. Pushed it back inside, and proceeded to try and reinstall it....I'll cut this short (longer version to be on my thread), after a few searches on MUD on finding the BB and where the rotor should be, having to turn the oil sending unit with a screw driver, finally seated the dizzy with a pop, and I got it all back together and running......albeit, 3 hours later.

OH, some tips on turning the flywheel/crank to find the BB, jack up the right rear wheel only and spin it slowly. One more thing, my fly wheel has two round circles on it, one is smaller than the other. That is the BB you are looking for....."Don't ask! It's part of the 3HR install!"

The remote starter button is your friend. For valves and distributor, etc. Best $9 I 've spent in a while. Glad you bit the bullet and installed it.

Thanks! I could see where the remote starter is handy! HOWEVER, if I would have hit a remote starter button on my initial start-up, I would have seized my motor, being my dizzy wasn't seated all the way. So, it does have a negative side for beginners.....But if I wasn't such a Novice at the dizzy install, I would have known to feel for the pop when inserting it. Lesson learned with minimal damage. :hillbilly:

Obviously, if I had the remote starter, this would be a very different post. A blessing in disguise. ;)

I have never used the remote starter to actually start anything,, just to bump the engine over for seating the dizzy and setting valves, all with the coil wire off.

Oh!....Shows how much I know about using one of them. Thanks for the info.
