Maybe we can start another thread....Southern Cruisers to HIH...as it gets closer to August to plan routes and meeting points. For me, I'm not sure whether my wife is going or if a buddy who went last year will go. If my buddy goes, I'll have to pick him up at an airport somewhere between here (South Tx) and Ouray which may impact when I leave and my route.

@Bloomer same boat here. If my daughter tags along I would probly do the same. At least one night by myself and let the wife and daughter stay at the motel. I even considered taking my camper and finding an RV area so we could stay longer but taking a class C and the cruiser is just not very sensible. But I want them to enjoy it so I can enjoy I if you know what i mean lol.. My daughter is still iffy on going with us. Just want to get a leg up on arrangements..

If you guys decide wether on Tues or Wed either would work for me.. I scheduled vacation and wont return til the 6th in the AM to work on the 7th..

Can't wait to get done with this little blue baby to start taking care of the truck for the trip! This one is paying for the truck add-ons and the trip itself.

Is sandiegocruiser the only other one leaving from CA or is there somebody else?
Looking for tag alongs from west coast! Anybody?

Yeah, that's a clients car!
No intention to high jack the tread but thought it would be cool to post a pic since this car is allowing me to make the trip and add a bunch to the truck!
I decided to stop working for the man and do it for myself! Keep the rewards of my own work instead of making somebody else rich!
Alright now! Let's talk land cruisers...

@Get outside that's kickass.. Anyways, all I have is A/Ts and gonna remove my runners.. taking my 12v compressor and some tools. Other than that lookin outvto see what most folks are reccomending.. anyone taking a portable shower?

I'm planing on adding a water heater system to the truck prior to this trip, that goes along w many other projects! Time will tell what gets done and what has to wait.

@twentyocho - pretty sure there are hot springs a few minutes down the road in Ouray. Was planning to use those as the hot shower! My wife has a pretty strict maximum 2 days without a hot shower/real bathroom rule, so we'll be sneaking into town at least once or twice during our stay.

Anyone who is on the fence about their kids coming, bring 'em! We need some other young ones for ours (11 and 13) to run around with. Mom and I want to relax a bit, and the more things they have to do to keep themselves occupied the better it'll be for us! :)

My girlfriend has that same rule. Hoping there are public showers around there. Does anyone know?

@twentyocho and other...I had the pleasure of attending last years. Based in what I learned, here are the best recommendations where to sink your money for the trip:

1. Warm sleeping bag

2. Good CB setup - lots of coms I missed out on last year with no exterior antenna

3. Good tires (one guy had a failure 20 mins into the first run last year)

4. Good camera and memory cards - but beware - while the scenery is amazing, first timers will get home to sort and realize many of them look the same.

5. Good headlamps for getting around camp at night

6. Place to put your trash. If you have a swing out tire carrier, invest I a trasharoo. I ran mine strapped to a crate I my roof... Thing is awesome.

There are showers and plenty of provisions in town. We made runs for gas on Saturday, but you don't want to top off given how it can mess with the charcoal canisters when ascending to 12k ft. You won't need any gas cans.

Be prepared for rain... Boots, ponchos, etc. heck, get an awning if you'd like. It poured the first night but was sunny until the last run on Sunday.

Don't haul firewood in.. Buy locally so you don't pick up hitchhiking insects, etc. there is a really nice store that had a ton in silverton which I highly recommend, along with True Grit Cafe right across the street from it.

We aired down Thursday AM and didn't air back up until Leaving town Sinday. There is a gas station on your way out of Telluride and air is free.

In the end, with 35 like minded folks, we will have enough tools to tear down, and enough parts to rebuild a 100 from scratch.

Just bring whatever you normally bring on the trail/camping, and you will be fine.

The guys did a really good job last year with their hit list like this, and sure they will do the same this year.

@DJWUZJ appreciate the info. Specially the CB bit. Was planning on taking just a good hand held. May have to just buy a nice permanent set up..
