I'm starting to do lot of research into putting a 2003-07 LQ4/LQ9 with a 4L80E into my '96 FZJ80. @lazy's thread about his conversion has been a massive help, and I plan on following his footsteps except for a few things to keep my budget down. I plan to run the OEM gauges and radiator, and trying to keep my budget around $7-8k). For instance, for my fueling, I'll be using GFBN plastic bundy fittings with rubber fuel line instead of the fittings and AN lines he ran. I've got a google doc/sheet that I am working on with my build for others to follow as well.

Anyway, I have a few questions that have arisen that I would like input on. I know lazy installed a reluctor ring in his 4WD transmission - What needs the ring to read off of, the GM ECU? I would prefer not to even split the engine/transmission on my purchased donor swap. If I went with something like the Marlin Crawler VSS, I assume this goes where the Toyota speedo was in the transfer case, then how does the speedo get a signal? If I do open up the transmission, is it a big job to get down to that output carrier if I leave everything else alone?

Next question has to do with the Marks adapter... I would assume so, but does it work with the H2FAV that is in my LC (as opposed to the H2FA)?

GM ECU needs the reading off the output shaft (And input) to ensure the transmission is running correctly. The yota T case is like 2 or 4 pulses per rev, while the reluctor rings are 30-40 (Sorry, don't remember the exact number off the top of my head). You can run your stock speedometer off of the t case VSS.

I'm not sure on that Marlin Crawler VSS thing, but you need to convert the signal up. I think it is actually for a mechanical speedometer and VSS to use a mechanical VSS to electronic speedometer (which our VSS already has).

Output carrier is all the way at the bottom of the tranny. I have a few resources I can email over to you if you PM me your email. It's not that bad of a job, I did it in a Saturday. OF course, I still haven't driven my swap (I need to get my gas pedal mounted, sway bar connected and Front drive shaft connected - that's it!).

H2FA AND H2FAV are the same... H2FA just doesn't have a viscous coupling and came in th 91-92 FJ80's behind the 3F-e motors IIRC

Have you made any progress with this swap? I just purchased a 2007 LQ4 with 4L80E combo and am trying to compile a list of parts I need.

I've purchased an engine, transmission (2003 LQ4 and 4L80E 4WD), and all other needed parts from a donor truck, and have been disassembling it in my garage. It needs a few maintenance items (rear main seal, spark plug wires, etc) that I am addressing first. I'm keeping my eye on the dollar vs AUD to purchase the transfer case adapter from Marks; I should just order it, as it has only swung about $40 either way since I started watching.

Awesome! I haven't been watching the conversion rate change, would not have even thought of that! Glad I asked! Is our purchasing power going up or down currently?

Approximately how much are we looking at in US dollars, to buy and ship the adaptor here?

so I went through the whole, what to do about the VSS, theres a couple things you need to know, if you wire your 4low switch input on your GM PCM to say "Hey im in 4 low" you can use the dakota digital VSS adapter, this would than provide the VSS signal to both your GM PCM and your dash

OR you do the in trans VSS, ultimately, you should throw a minimum ,unless its a newer rebuild or <50k miles trans, clutches, which requires the entire trans to come apart, the install of this tone is ring is quite simple. You should be able to find someone to do the trans locally for 200-300 bucks (it took me around 6 hours to go through and install, my buddy said he could do it under an hour)

while your in the trans I would throw a transgo HD2 shift kit as well...... IIRC correctly its like a 125 for the shift kit and ~100 for the VSS ring, a factory soft goods kit is like 150

Personally I'd just leave all of the stock toyota VSS wires in place along with all of the transfer case wiring (which you basically have to, to get CDL).

When you cut out the unused toyota transmission wiring you'll need to add a ground source to a couple of the wires to keep CDL and VSS working, but it is quite simple to do.

@daytonadogie WOW I was way off! $1127 shipped and that includes their temp sensor adapter to run the Toyota sensor on the LQ4. I went with the 2312HKR headers from Hooker and an F-body oil pan and accessories. Trying to find a local tuner to disable the VATS on the Chevy ECU. Getting close to start tearing apart the Toy! I'm nervous! I have never completed a project of this magnitude!

Any new progress @Nstig8r ?

Did you go direct to marks for the adapter kit for the 4l80? That's definitely cheaper than expected.
