Why did you tear the motor down?

Sent from my iPhone using IH8MUD

It had a front crank seal leak and was disgustingly dirty. Far too nasty looking to go in the SWB. I also wanted to check the timing chain slack. It's pretty good, but I'm debating doing it anyway. Unfortunately it's one of those "while I'm in there things" that could spiral out of control pretty quick. To pull the timing chain I have to pull the oil pump, which then means I have to pull the oil pan, which is critical to get realigned properly. Then do I replace the oil pump while its off? $40 for the pan gasket. $56 for the timing gears. etc. etc. It adds up quick.

For now I think I'll do a rattle can rebuild. Clean up everything well and paint it. Replace the front and rear main seals. I'll sandblast and powdercoat the front cover, accessory drive brackets and valve covers. It was supposed to run well once. It broke a couple of exhaust bolts, as 6.0Ls are known to do, so I have to get those out. Then probably new manifolds. That's why it was pulled from the donor truck in the first place.

If it smokes or is down on compression I'll pop it back out for a real rebuild next winter.

First round of cleaning.

Block and heads are all clean and painted. Oil pan is all clean. Front cover, balancer, alt/PS bracket and one valve cover are media blasted and clean and ready for powder coat. Bolts are all tumbled.

Minor setback on the project as a whole however..

Total brake failure pulling into the shop. I had a choice between a truck on the hoist or the LV. I almost got it between the two, but the windshield frame caught the tire on the truck. There was no way I was crashing both the SWB and the LV.

Damn, Todd. Sucks, but atleast it is a somewhat easy fix, for you any way. Next question, what caused the brake failure?

Ouch! Sorry to see gumby.

Best of luck getting the 2short project back on the fast track.
Real fast track with that 6.0.

Dang.... Government shuts down and the whole world goes to pot!

Oops! Hopefully it's a quick fix.
