Great info guys, thanks for the input.

I will be messing with the design over the Holidays, and I will try to knock a proto-type out before too long.

We'll see how it goes, and I will update with pics when once I get them.

Remind me where you live again?:D

Your storage box sounds a lot like what I would be looking for. Are you making it out of wood or metal? Would you be interested in making a second one? Maybe for store credit?:grinpimp:

I was thinking all wood, then I thought a metal frame might make for a more solid base to start with. I have worked with wood for over a decade, and that is where I will start.

I will let you know how they come along.

Some great ideas on above bed storage. Has anyone modified the rear bed with a between the frame box that accesses from the bottom of the bed? Something like the in bed trunk on the Honda Ridgeline.

pardion modded his yellow 40 years ago like you're suggesting. Used an old aux tank that he cut the top out of.

22 gallons of storage space!

Whew! Hell of a Holiday Party yesterday $ 145.00 a shot Scotch with my Regional President at the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel, I know I had 3, he had as many, glad I wasnt buying! But Damn was it smooth......I am going to fab the first out of wood, I am more of a wood guy when it comes to stuff like this box, Birch plywood so it has a nice tight grain, it will waterproof pretty well, glued, screwed, aluminum trim, recessed handles and hidden hinges, should seal up pretty nice......you can have a look at the proto type, if it works for you, I would be happy to make one for you. Oh, I live in the Land of Opportunity....SCV:cool: Steve

I have a storage box that fits between the wheel wells and fills up most of the space in the back. It sits about 1 inch above the wells. I contains 1 full lenght pullout drawer on full length rails. I have the drop down tailgate and the box works great cruiser and box are both in Idaho and I'm in Cal until the 15th of January. Will post some pics if you want to wait that long.

Plowboy-

I would love to see it when you get back to your cruiser.

Since both of you are talking about using plywood, I would highly reccommend using Baltic Birch ply. The size of the sheet is 5' by 5' and comes in 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 thickness. Every ply is the same as the top layer and is the same thickness which makes it very tough, although a bit heavier than local 'sponge core' ply. Where I work we use 1/2" for all our drawer boxes and dovetail the corners. You don't have butt and dado joints that pop apart so easily. This makes a box that is very durable and will hold up better to all the twisting and bouncing around that being in the back of a 40 would hand out. If you use metal drawer guides, most standard guides are made to hold 70 pounds.

Even if you personally don't know how to draw, I know you work with people who do!;p Show me a sketch, and if I like it, I might spring for the materials to build both our boxes.

I took a few pictures of my prototype system this weekend.
Eventually I'll probably build drawers. Right now the top isn't attached to the box, this was so I could go back later and add drawer rails. The top and box are through bolted into the body usingt T nuts, four in the box and four in the top.

This picture shows how I got around the rusted rear sill. I'm looking for a better system to latch the finished unit hopefully something more like the 45 latches.

It makes a nice shelf for gubs or dogs.

It dosen't show well but I radiused the top to fit the plate on the Metaltech cage

I also need to figure out a way to hold the gate flat for a work surface, I'll be looking for tunnelrats pictures. You can see the plastic bin on the left, it works okay for now, we already had it and were using it for picnic and camping kitchen stuff. The right holds a few ammo boxes and pouches with tools, recovery gear and spare parts in them. You can also see how I attached the other side of the hinges to the bottom of the box, also with T nuts.

After I refine the design I'll take my good table saw out of storage and build the real deal out of solid core birch. I'd like to have a FJ45 style tail gate, when I get that it will probably key me to do the finished version.

Unless someone has one for sale by then. ;)

I don't enjoy wood working as much as I use to.

Mark, no problem, just found out we are shutting down from the 22nd through the 2nd,:bounce2: so will have some time to fool around, if i can pull it off before the holiday, I will make a run down to your shop with some drawings during that week, I have a youngster working for me that is pretty good on Auto-Cad, been complaining he wants more to do, had planned on giving him this. Steve

Funny part is I think the box in the back of my 40 came from @REZARF in a round of about way. I added some plywood to the top, and a hinge on one side.
