I needed some sort of lockable storage for the back of my FJ40 to keep tools and spare parts in. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on it since it is just a trail rig and I have a lot of other mods to spend the money on. I found an old truck box out in our feild, the latches and locks still work, and it even has keys. So I cut it in half, welded some sheet metal on the ends, and bolted them into the back of the tub. The only bad thing is that they take up a lot of space, I don't have room for my big cooler now, but they are only held in place by 3 bolts, so I can easily pull one out if I want to.

Here are the pics:

I like:D

Paint the inside......my company commander always said....."You don't shine the back of your shoes.....you don't wipe yer ass!" But he was a cocktard anyway.
Good idea.

Great work! And great fit.

Do you know the brand name for the truck box?

If you can find used ones, as they are not made anymore, ConFer made some nice boxes for a Cruiser. Yours look great though. Put a rack system on the back for your cooler.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what brand it was, there was no tag or anything on it, about the only thing I know about it is that it is over 20+ years old, my dad said it came on a truck he bought back in '85 or '86.

stout looking boxes. put a divider in one, line it and use it as your cooler. then, nobody steals your beer. i mean cokes.

A friend of mine had a simular idea, he said I should get one of those styrofoam and cut it down to fit inside of one of them. I might do something like that if I don't need all the room. I did find a thin Rubbermaid cooler than will fit in between the boxes, so I might just get one of those.

I was thinking about building something simular to those ones until I found this box. One of my friends suggested I put the boxes on sliders so I can pull them out the back when I need them, then I can mount stuff above them. If I can find some sliders than are strong enough to hold them that aren't too expensive, I might go that way.

Just a thought but you could weld to two boxes together after removing the joining "wall" then you'd have a nice big box to run with as well. Even one mod further would be to add a filler panel to stretch them the entire width of the rear cargo area.

Just thinking out loud.

I like your idea a lot!

I was actually debating on making them into one large box, but decided that it would be easier to have 2 separate boxes. I’m going to be using one to keep spare fluids, parts, and recovery gear in one (which is the stuff that I generally do not use as much), then I will keep all my tools and stuff that I will be using more in the other one, it will keep me organized a little better.

It looks like in the first pic that you can do that with almost any old steel pickup tool box. I like the idea, Im going to keep my eyes open on Craigslist for old trucks and free stuff. Very cool. I'd only use 1/2 of it, but I could give the other one to a buddy.

My wife was cleaning out her grandparents house (after they passed to the next plane of existance) and he had two old craftsman 21" carry tool boxes with lots of rust but sound enough. Painted them black and put one on each side of the rear deck by the gate. Threw on pad locks with the same combo and ready to go. 3 bolts again and easy to take out if needed. This left plenty of room for my dog's round pillow bed so she is comfortable.

not as cool as the truck tool box, but most people can find the boxes at garage sales or collecting rust around the house.
