I have an aisin that was rebuilt about 4-5 yrs ago by whom I don't know. Got an appointment with Bobby of cruiser corp next week.
Has weber on it now and runs about a 7 or 8 out of 10.
Transfer case leak has me worried. It was 1 qt low after driving back to AR How expensive is that to fix? I want an Orion so I'm thinking of not fixing it and going straight to that.

Solid point. With ANY vehicle, there are issues - both disclosed and hidden. I sold my truck with as much honest info as I could, but something will pop up, I'm sure.I would bet that around 95% of 40s on the market have some "issues" that the new owner will have to deal with. The other 5% would likely cost $12,000 or more.
The newest 40 will be 30 years old next year!
Orion = around $2,000 ready to go from Georg. Georg or Poser is the only way to go on an Orion. Mine has worked flawlessly since the install. Big money but the best upgrade you will ever do. Let the "told you so's" begin!
If the seal is bad between the transmission and tcase, fluid will get pushed from the tcase to the transmission... or is it the other way? Help me out here. Anyway, the short term fix is a hose between the fill plugs that allows the overfilled to drain back to the underfilled. You can have one made at a hose shop like Parker for around $22. I have been running a hose like this for around 8 years.
The other big area for a tcase to leak is past the seal on the output within the speedo housing. It will leak into the parking brake drum. My parking brake drum required a speedy sleeve due to grooves worn into it. I also got a speedo housing modified to accept two seals from either Cruiser Outfitters or Mudrak. My memory is shot!
If you're considering an Orion, get the hose mentioned above for a short term work-around.
Wow... this thread has really gone in a direction I did not foresee...

Mike, dunno much about Cruiser Company, but I can assure you that you'll get more bang for your buck with Chris Welch at Off Road Specialties. That dude is cheap when it comes to labor.

Buying a 40 is like getting married. There are no good surprises after the deal is done.
