Saw this picture posted up on another forum. The vehicle was seen in Thailand. I've seen the first and second gen 4-door pickups (that we never got -), but this is the first 4-door first gen 4Runner I've ever seen.

Anyone know if it was an option overseas? Or custom built? Or any other details?

Oh great.... something else to lust over! :D It sure looks factory to me... No removable top, though there is a slight separation between the front seat cab roof and the rear of the roof...... 2wd fenders... No apparent locking hubs, and the front axle doesn't look like a solid axle or the IFS we got... Could be 2wd...

I've never heard of or seen anything like it...

got a link to where you found the pic?

Something about the body line says "land rover" to me n

But I disagree on the front axle. It looks solid.

I did some googling and the only picture of a 4 door 1st gen is this one. I'm going to bet it isn't called a 4runner.

Somebody needs to point CDan and Mot at this thread. Mot work the Japanese angle and CDan can drill his Toyota knowledge for an answer.

Only north America got 4Runners, outside here they are called "Hilux Surf"

Yep and there wasn't a lot of the hilux surf either in the 1st gen 4 doors. When I dumbed down my search to "1st gen" instead of generation I got more hits, but nothing important.

Partial explanation: Toyota Thailand (vehicle was spotted in Thailand) has a history of producing vehicles that are not made by any other Toyota plants. Hilux Mighty-X and Hilux Tiger are a couple examples... My guess is someone over there thought that a 2 door Surf was hard to get into and decided to make a 4 door, and due to whatever contract they had with Toyota Japan, they were allowed to do so...

Speculation, but I know where I'm going on vacation next.... :P

You guys...

Anything is possible with Photoshop.

Look at the blur top and bottom in the photo, it's been stretched.

If it's photoshopped, then it's the best I've ever seen... All the aspect ratio's are intact. What do you mean stretched? The whole back end is different from the conventional 4Runner, no sliders, different wheel wells....

If you don't want to believe, then you don't get to go for a ride in mine! (just have to find one now...) :flipoff2:

I agree that anything is possible in Photoshop. And it isn't the best photo to start with, so easier to hide an edit. But I agree with 2ndGen. Not that it is the best Photoshop I've seen, but that it doesn't scream "edit" to me. As 2ndGen says the back glass is different, the roof is different, wheelwells, etc. Add in that the back door handle is different from the front one, you can see the rear seat through the window and the rear roof pillar, and the reflections in the glass "work." If it is a Photoshop, he went to a fair amount of trouble for a crummy picture.

Actually, that is another thing. I find it harder to "shop" a low resolution photo than a high resolution one. The more pixels you have, the easier it is to blend things. Now, it is possible that he started with a better photo and then cut down the resolution at the end to hide his sins...

Still, even if a "shop" it is a pretty cool idea.

Magnifying proves my point. Look at the color changes... above the B pillar, at the rear edge of the rear "door", the entire edge of the roof was patched in.
