Hiya! and help help help! : )
I have a 1974 FJ40- been having heat problems which I fixed with a good radiator overhaul.
BUT-
I would like to upgrade my current 4 blade fan to a 6 or 8 blade- I have heard they help with heat A LOT.
I am traveling to the US of A soon, and am hoping to pick one up while I am there.
I have been reading the forums and my head is spinning.
Any suggestions on which to buy? Spacers, new bolts.. ugh!
I currently have a 16 inch 4 blade with original 3 core Radiator.
Oh yeah- I really don't want to spend the $106 bucks that Cool Cruisers charges.
There has GOT to be something that is fantastic for less than that.
I really appreciate any suggestions!
Thanks in advance!

When I installed power steering on my 71, I switched to a clutch fan and associated water pump from a 60 series to get the double groove water pump pulley. The bolt pattern is different between the two fans. Just know that the 60 series clutch fan is larger in diameter, so I had to modify the fan shroud. It wasn't a big deal, but it certainly wasn't plug and play. I'm not sure if a later year 40 series clutch fan would have fit. Someone else might know. I picked up the fan off craigslist for cheap from someone parting out a cruiser ($15 maybe?). I bought a new water pump with a lifetime warranty from the local parts house.

I have a 4/74 and IIRC the 8 blade fan would not fit with the stock fan shroud but the 6 blade did. You'll have to switch to a later shroud if u want to go with the 8.

never did the 8 blade but the 6 blade was an easy swap .probably worth it to modify the shroud for the 8 good luck

I went with the 6 blade also on my 74. Very noticeable difference in airflow. I just got another one from Beno the other day for another project.

I'm curious. Do you have a spacer between your blade & pump? I have one now but can't remember if I did with the metal blade. Too long ago or too many brain cells ago. It would be good to know if you need it while rounding up parts. I'd think you'd need longer bolts also if you're adding a spacer. Maybe someone else will chime in.

I don't think there is a spacer now.. I will check in a little while though and confirm with pics....
Still looking for a direct link for purchasing a new one though! ;)
cruiser parts has a 6 blade one for $86.00- hoping to do better!

Here's the pic. It looks like there is one!

Hmm, can't tell from that angle but it looks that's all part of the pulley and no separate spacer. I have two grooves so I can't compare. Either way it looks like the 6 blade will bolt right up to you're setup using the bolts that are there. On the 6 blade I measure 15/16" from the mounting surface of the blade to the rear edge of the blades.

1. Use of a plastic fan will require a spacer.
2. 8 blade fan will require a larger fan shroud opening on pre-75 FJ40s, but not necessarily on FJ55s.

Best

Thanks again! I'm going to see what I can get in Guatemala first... then off to the internet
