Update

Been slow going since the family got back, but did manage a few things, most notably the cleaning of the t-case, pictures not required.
Did manage to burn in the motor mounts
Pilot bearing installed

Also changed the rear main seal, while I was there
Here are my helpers, changing the gasket and seal on the front of the H55
Helping with the torque wrench and Loctite

Painted the flywheel cover (FSM term) and torqued it on, I would have got the flywheel on, but couldn't find the torque spec. The only motor manual I have is for the 3B and it states the flywheel torque at 130 ft/lbs. Seemed a bit excessive, quick search on Mud yielded a spec of 50 ft/lbs +/- seems more in line.
Where I am today, one step closer to a 5 speed

I take it you welded your crossmember mounts in place? That's what it looks like from the pic. Actually with the fresh paint on it, it looks like it came that way from the factory.

This is a JDM frame, it once housed an H55... and a 12H-T, I would have loved to have scored the driveline as well.
So good observation, it is factory. I welded in mounts for the 3F-E

Thanks Joe_E, I'm going to have to find a 3F-E motor FSM, I would have thought the heavy duty chassis FSM would cover it, but the flywheel info I found was in the 3B motor FSM. The girls love to learn about wrenching, we'll see how long that novelty lasts. They tell their Mom that they were helping Dad change "caskets"

I got driveshafts from Steve at EBI when I bought my 5 speed from him. I wanted to avoid the mods to my old ones (and it was a lot quicker). I also have an extra FSM for a 62 that I would probably let go cheap if you make it down this way. I know you are not putting the auto back in but it is a complete engine/chassis manual short of the 5 speed.

Fun starts tommorow, the diesel is taking us to Rubicon....

Tony

Tony, I kept the driveshafts from my BJ60, haven't done any measuring but I'm 95% sure they will work fine. You got a turbo on that 3B? If not, should be an economical trip, the Grapevine will be painful. I sure miss the annual trips we used to take to Rubicon/ Rubithon. Made some great friends down there.
Have a great time, take lots of pics and try not to run over any Jeeps.

Thankfully the Grapevine is 500 miles farther south than we are going. But a few of the hills will be slow I am sure. I used to live in South Lake Tahoe so it's sort of like going home.

If the BJ is where your 5 speed came from the driveshafts should be just fine (or if it had a spacer on the back of a four)

We don't need to look for a jeep to run over as we are bringing one with us for ritual abuse.:D

Yeah no turbo. Did get 19mpg towing my camp trailer to Oregon in April but that was with the 4 speed at 2900rpm. Should be a world better with the 5 speed.

Keep posting pics of the wagon build. I feel your pain.

Tony

Grapevine? What was I thinking, I was thinking of the pass south of Medford, dropping down to Cali, that's a pretty high pass. I'll be wheelin' with you vicariously.

Got the tranny bolted on, close up view through the inspection cover access, new seal for the gearshift

New bushing on the bottom of the shifter, when I took this shifter out of my old BJ it didn't have this bushing on it, no wonder the gearshift rattled like crazy

Between this thread and Guy's, I've got 99% of all the information I need aside from my own personal experience for when I do my conversion.

Damn it's gonna be fun to drive a manual again and feel just how much power the 3FE really has when it's not being losing a ton of it through that heavy automatic.

Now I just have to find something to do with my A440F and factory tcase :grinpimp:
