3B Turbo Kit Build Review... Long Overdue

This is easily one of the most helpful and even-tempered 4x4 forums on the internet. If you haven't enjoyed your time here try Pirate4x4... that'll really pop your cherry. :D

Your chilly reception has nothing to do with your vocabulary - you would have gotten a warm welcome had you just started by posting the good photos you have on this page:
Richard’s “Higher Expectations†1981 BJ40 TLC

(Though we still would have bagged on the chrome :D)

What upset everyone is the bull****... on this page () you're still claiming a 3B that is 200hp, 300ft-lb and 35mpg. We all know (and you know it too) that every one of those figures is total crap. It insults us and demeans you that you thought we'd fall for it.

Its not too late man, believe me: by and large Diesel Tech holds no grudges. Just throw some Tech up here and we'll love you.

X10...i am a total goof, and everyone here has been really great even if they disagree...it seems that few people here talk in absolutes and flaunt knowledge....

I have made a TON of friends in a short time, but i have no agenda besides sharing and learning..in all honesty mate your posts do not come across that way...chillax and add where you can and ask where you need..otherwise, go bump your head on a different forum.

D

Just found this again... He's Baaaaaaaaack.

At least no personal Bios and such this time. Still hasn't learned to play nicely though.

.. and the fact that most mud members indulge in criticizing a pin drop on this site..

:hhmm:

Dude, my experience here on Mud over the last 6/7 years has actually been the exact opposite !

Oh and the fact that I run an (as yet) unblistered mild steel adapter between my 13BT manifold and Mitsu TD04 turbo, has nothing to do with my experience either. :D

You cannot go back to alter your infamous beginning here on Mud but you surely can contribute to alter your future.

so...
now you have me all worried.
i am using the 304 SS to run the exhaust on the troopy build. i still have the original part from Radd Cruisers turbo kit so i can change the first couple feet out easy enough
but
is this concern something i need to address? is it a definate bad move, a "i doubt it will happen" move or a 1 in a 1000 chance? could the issue be the movement of the exhaust that is causing the cracks?
the exhaust shop iin Alberta i use for feedback have been in business for a long long time and they told me not an issue for my application. the other shop i have dealings with here said the same thing.

conflicting information can be a PITA.

all feed back welcome.

I'm curious too. I used 304L to build my manifold for the turbo on my H in the Troopy. Is 304L acceptable or is my engine a ticking time bomb?

i said "screw it" if there is a possibility then i would just change the first 18" back to mild steel

and i did.

not worth the risk.

comments still wanted and desired.

The manifold doesn't get as hot as the exhaust gasses!

I know this because I once cooked a salmon on the manifold and it took a couple hours! (we were going through the malahat for the first half!)

Stainless 304 expands/contracts 50% more than plain carbon steel does. So if you have a highly restrained bit of exhaust that cycles in temperature a lot it can crack itself due to this alone.
304 also work hardens a lot. Meaning everytime it gets stretched it gets harder and tries to resist being stretched again. This also leads to cracking.
The temperature corrosion thing isn't a great concern and should be less with 304L (low carbon 304) than normal 304.

I wouldn't worry about it if you already have some, but I also wouldn't go to the extra expense of using it for new parts unless it were a show car.

thanks Dougal for the explaination, makes sense and i suspected that is the reasoning.
i ended up with the mild aluminized steel for the first 18" and the exhaust temps drop considerably at that point.
should be golden now...

Happy to help.

The normal stainless used for exhaust tubing is ferritic grade (304 is austenitic) which is softer and more malleable. It does however show up some surface corrosion which 304 doesn't.
304 and 316 are food grade which is why it's the most common one to find.

So should I be concerned about developing cracks due to the SS pipe running off the mild S flange ?

Sorry if I am Off Topic ChrisB

As long as it's got room to expand and contract you should be okay. Vibration can be a problem too.

I'm installing this kit on my 3B next week and will doing new filters concurrently. Should I use the part number for a 13bt now for the fuel filter? Send

Does the 13bt filter have more flow? I have never heard of getting more flow without sacrificing filtration. Are these kits still being produced?

Essar5- Yes, we are planning another run very soon. Something in the air lately has completely cleaned us out. We have pics of the kits and components on our facebook site- Jefferson State Machining/facebook.
In addition to including a polished aluminum crossover tube as standard, we offer a custom build exhaust downpipe w/ all hardware for the members that don't have eady access to muffler shops.
