My cruiser bj60 stock seemed to run great going up hills, then underwent some repairs as the suspension was pooched, also the stock tires got swapped for 32x10.5x15r.
At this point I was stuck out of town going to pick up a 1700lb BigFoot trailer (17ft) My ride home was mainly flat highway driving ( Edmonton to Calgary ) some small hills but nothing that would take me out of 5th on the way up there.
Driving home was actually a chore with the old 83bj60, it has 383,000km on it. As it was a recent purchase the year before we don't have any info. on what was done and how many owners.
The chore was driving home barely doing the speed limit. Sometimes the rpm was at 3000. I know 2500 is optimal for milage in my experience but some hills you just can't beat.
Now we drive the ol girl and she barely gets over 110km/hr, the hills not pulling anything we sometimes are doing 90km or even 80km. same trip destination.
Wondering if I pushed her to hard or it may be tires, wondering if the injectors or injection pump need attention ?
Wondering what you all think ???
Thanks

I'd be checking filters first off. Usual suspects.

X2 also drain the sedimenter it catches all sorts of stuff from the fuel i drain mine every 5k when i change the oil amd fuel filter

I agree with the above recommendations^^^ it definitely sounds like fuel starvation, while you are at it check the air filter as well.

It's an old non turbo, indirect injection four cylinder Diesel.. you've added bigger tyres, and then a large trailer.. and you're concerned at the change in performance. I dont believe there's a specific fault here such as fuel starvation..

You should ensure you've got everything in tip top shape to give yourself maximum performance:

  • Clean air filter
  • Fresh oil
  • New fuel filters
  • Factory Sedimenter deleted and replaced with an aftermarket one with a sight bowl
  • Valve clearances well adjusted
  • Injection Timing spot on
  • Rebuilt injectors fitted
  • Good compression (not much you can do if its down, but worth measuring)
  • Appropriate tyre pressures
  • etc

Also.. you should be really, really careful putting any load on your fifth gear whilst towing.. its a weak gear, and you're playing russian roulette towing in it..

And.. any chance you had a signifcant headwind on the way home?

Head wind : I don't think their was a head wind. I will start with the filters. I did have an aftermarket filter/ sedementer in my 42 under the hood, it was fabulous, and draining the water was done in a pinch ! Seeing as the fuel milage is pretty spot on I would say the injectors are in good condition. Thanks for the 5th gear and towing mention !
Thanks guys !

From my experience you were lucky to be able to cruise at 110km per hour especially towing a trailer with a NA 3b. These 3Bs are very sensitive to gearing and the larger tires can really hurt your top end. What elevation are you at? Was that a gps or spedo calculation, the larger tires will have an effect on your spedo and you will be going faster than what it marks at. Like everyone said, change fuel filter and check sedimentor but im betting on the larger tires is whats robbed your power (same happened to me with a bj70 and 42).

the elevation was going from 645m (meters) to 1045m. The idea was the trailer would be light enough so we could tow it here and there. It's obvious that is not an option in all reality. I'm looking for another tow vehicle currently. Likely the tires are throwing things off but changing filters is an option that is easy to pull off. Towing with the trailer on the mostly flat, I was in 4th and 80 to 90km/hr pretty well never went into 5th while towing.
Without the trailer getting into 5th was achieved on the flat or going downhill.
