Toyo Open Country 33x10.50x15 , longer shackles and stock springs . Front axle has been cut/turned . No real run unless I flex it really hard . Love these tires , even in wet and on ice - great for an MT .
Sarge

33 X 12.50's on a '77. The front tires will sometimes rub the fenders if you hit a bump while making a turn.

31 x 10.5 x 15 mud terrains from china, stock springs that are sagging a lil bit.

in 1973 i took my then new 73 to get tires i ended up getting 32 mudders ,they were the biggest tire at the time and i took a couple pair of aviation shears with me to cut the fenders because they rubbed just sitting there then went out and got stuck for 6 hours

^^ Ah, sweet youth.

lol i have 35s on 4.5 inches of lift

rubs like a bitch :flipoff2:

My FJ40 had 31" x 10.5" on the vintage 15" x 8" wagon wheels with stock suspension.
They had beat up & rolled over the inner lip on the back fenders.
On the more narrow stock steel wheels they may have been OK.
I'm now running 235 x 75 x 15s on stock steelies, below, they are functional but not likely to satisfy a need for big & chunky tires.
They measure just under 29" dia.

Good looking truck there, Cleg.

You've got close to original sized tires. I think they came with 7.00 x 15 bias ply tires and changed to H78r15 when radials appeared. Yours are probably a little wider than the bias tires but about the same as the old H8's.

Except for a few details (black mirrors and hood latches, Warn hubs..) your cruiser looks like it jumped off the page from the early 1960's ads Toyota ran at the time.

I am running the same tire GA is running....quiet and I like the look too. Are those stock steelies that have been widened GA? As I am going back to stock wheels I will be looking for a 15X10.5X33 tire. If I did not have the 3" Man-a-Fre lift I would be running 31's though

If you plan on doing a fair amount of highway driving the 33's are nice for the extra rubber overdrive. My 45LPB has 33/10.5 all terrains and it cruises right along comfortably at 60-65mph with the 50 year old stock F engine. My 40 has 31/10.5 mud tires and is a decade newer and is much happier at about 55mph. 31's are on stock suspension. 33's fit with an extended shackle and castor shims to correct pinion angle.

Thought I would ask for some updated opinions here. I am currently running 33/10.5 BFG AT’s that I am sure are out of date. I am about to install an OME 2.5” full kit so new tires are in the future. Currently running original white wagon wheels but looking at the 16” Cityracer wheels w hub caps for a more retro stock look. What are the current thoughts on tires these days? I know BFG has KO3 that looks nice. My truck is not a mud truck. Total poser street cruiser but want it to look the part and rep the Land Cruiser nation well. I don’t want anything noisy.

I went with the CityRacer 16” wheels, caps, and BFG KM3’s in 7.5R16. They’re a bit bigger than my 31’s but not quite 33’s. The best part is they at only about 8” wide so they tuck up into the fenders nicely. My truck is on OEM springs with a slight (maybe 3/4”) lift from extended shackles. The rear fenders are trimmed, but only minimally from what I can tell.

I installed BFG LT235/85R16 ATs on Toyota 70-Series 16" wheels. The tires are nice and quiet, relatively tall (~32") and skinny. Should go well on the CityRacer wheels.

Here they are on my '86 FJ60 with OME suspension:

I'm thinking of installing the same combination on my '71 FJ40 build, after the new BFG 30X9.50R15 ATs wear out (currently on my '76 FJ40 with FJ60 chrome spoke wheels).

I like the tall skinny look you have going and am thinking of going the same route. I just wanted to know how you like the tire wheel combo so far? That 7.5R16 tire size seems like it would compliment the 5.5" wide wheels perfectly!
*Edit: I'd love to see some more pics of your 40 with tires/wheels if you have any!

I believe 7.00x15 is the size of the original spare that I've got.

I really wish toyota had used 16" wheels stock on the US ones( iirc the rest of the world could get 16" rims). Much better tire selection now VS 15" rims.
Can you even run a 33x12.5 on a stock rim?
