Overland Cruisers 2UZ-FE to H55F Bellhousing Adapter Kit | Made in USA

We've been working on a clean solution for swapping a Toyota 2UZ-FE V8 into older Land Cruisers while keeping the drivetrain architecture as close to factory as possible. After a lot of development work, we have a kit ready that we think the community will appreciate.

What It Does
The adapter allows the 2UZ-FE to bolt directly to the factory Toyota H55F 5-speed using the factory 2F/3F bellhousing. No custom bellhousing, no relocated transmission, no fabricated clutch setup.
It also works with all UZ family engines including the 1UZ-FE and 3UZ-FE, and is compatible with H41 and H42 transmissions equipped with the 10-spline input shaft.

Transmission Compatibility
Designed specifically for the FJ/HJ-series coarse-spline H55F, the version found behind the 2F, 3F, 2H, and 12HT engines.

Factory Components Retained
This is the part that makes this kit different from other 2UZ adapters on the market:
  • Factory 2F/3F bellhousing
  • Factory 2F flywheel
  • Factory clutch and clutch hydraulics
  • Factory transmission crossmember in most applications
Parts are easy to source, clutch feel is stock, and future service is straightforward.

Transmission Position & Crossmember Notes
The H55F stays in the factory location in the following trucks:
  • 40 Series originally equipped with an H55F
  • FJ/HJ60
  • FJ/HJ 70 Series
40 Series & 55 Series using a later H55F If you're dropping a later H55F into a 40 or 55 that didn't originally have one, you'll need an under-transmission crossmember since the later transmission doesn't have the early top-plate mount. We offer a crossmember specifically for this application.
FJ62 Because you're replacing an automatic with a manual, the factory crossmember location doesn't work. An aftermarket crossmember is required. We offer one specifically designed for FJ62 2UZ / H55F conversions.

Real-World Driving Impressions
We've put this combo through its paces in both a 60 and a 40 and here is what we found:
Gear spacing feels natural. No awkward jumps between ratios. Shift points are comfortable at normal RPMs and the engine has plenty of range if you want to extend it.
  • FJ/HJ60 with 3.70s and 33s — very well balanced. Would work fine with a 34" tire as well.
  • FJ/HJ40 with 4.10s and 33s — slightly over-geared, which means there is room to run 35s or larger comfortably.
  • FJ62 — if you're running 33s or smaller, an underdrive gear in the transfer case would not be a bad idea.
Overall it drives the way you'd want it to. Natural, predictable, and not like something was cobbled together.

Recommended Gear & Tire Combinations

Tire Size
Notes
3.7033"Very balanced setup
3.7034"Still performs well
4.1035"+Ideal tire size range
3.7033"Consider t-case underdrive for FJ62

Kit Contents
  • CNC-machined adapter plate
  • Precision crankshaft extender
  • Mounting hardware
  • Components are anodized

Compatible Trucks
  • FJ/HJ40
  • FJ/HJ45
  • FJ55
  • FJ/HJ60
  • FJ62
  • FJ/HJ 70 Series

Price: $2,200
Includes adapter plate, crank extender, and mounting hardware.
Crossmembers for 40 Series and FJ62 conversions available separately.
All components designed and manufactured in the USA. Patent pending.

At the time of posting, I have 4 available. Based on the the demand for the adapter, we will do another production run to meet demand.

Happy to answer questions. If you're planning a 2UZ swap into any of the truck listed above, this is worth a look before you start fabricating.

That is correct. The starter set up is just as it is in any other 2uz. The flex plate is retained for starter engagement.

So will the shifter and transfer case holes still need a new transmission hump becausr their shifted back?
Nope!

Similar question..

For a 40, how's the 2uz placement to the firewall.... Can you access the starter bolts from the tranny tunnel?
You access them from the engine bay. You can see the two top bell housing bolts and the the adapter with the recesses to access the starter bolts.

This is awesome. Great result, I'm so grateful for guys like you who create these improvements for Cruisers.

Does the engine computer need reflashing to handle being attached to a manual? Where does the ECU get the Vehicle Speed Sensor input from?

Thanks for the kudos! The harness does need to be reqorrked and ECU flashed. You can send your harness to @LexusV8 Engines to get that work done. In this application VSS input is not required.

This is a very innovative solution!!!! I have been cobbling together a 1UZ to H55 solution using the Dellow bellhousing etc. This solution is soooo much more straightforward

Do you recommend any specific flywheel (heavier than stock, stock?), and clutch (heavy duty, factory 2f?) for V8 drivability as well as durability of the clutch? Yes, I saw the notes above. (Just making sure because a 3uzfe is max torque of 325 ft-lb)

Lot's of questions....I can always call your shop to discuss.

What makes more sense? (actual question, not just me being a butthole)

Re-flashing the original computer, and tweaking the harness?
Or, just going with a complete standalone unit like a Haltech?

I would think tuning, the Haltech or similar would be the way to go. Plus you'd have some flexibility on sourcing parts, like a MAF or Oxygen sensors. You could use something super common for an LS, versus the way less common Toyota units.

I believe you sent an inquiry to the shop today. I hope you saw my response. If not, this is what I said… “Thanks for your question! The stock 2F flywheel is more than adequate. We have used that flywheel with a similar adapter set up on R2.8 Cummins Diesels that put out 400ft lbs. of torque. One of my personal trucks has been using that set up for the last 8 years with no problems whatsoever. Regarding the clutch set up you have a few options. Stock 2F which is what we are currently using on our 2UZ (315ft lbs) conversions has proved to be a non-issue. If you want to go with a heavier duty clutch you can use a Terrain Tamer HD clutch or a UniClutch. Both of those will be more than adequate.”

This looks really cool and I can’t wait to try it on a project.
Why is a crossmember required for a regular H42-equipped FJ40?
Is there clearance for a 60/80 power steering conversion with this ?

Two other questions:
1. Is the engine pictured a front, mid, or rear oil sump configuration? Need to clear the axle when the suspension is fully articulated.
2. Did you sell out of the first production run? I don't need one today but would be interested to get on the wait list for the next production run.

THIS is really cool! @bagochips76 will this be listed on your overlandcruiser website when its ready? This is really epic for 40/50/60 series guys looking to NOT swap in a vortec or sbc and keeping things all toyota under that hood!
