2nd row Bench seat vs side jump seats

Strap or bolt all that heavy gear down in the back or it could hurt the kids and you in an accident.

Below is my Con-Fer seat. I scored this on ebay for around $280 New in box/never used (although it was probably sitting around for at least 15 years or longer). Then dropped a few more dollars to have it reupholstered so the color and stitching were more like OEM upholstery. The last picture shows where I installed heavy duty steel rings to the seatbelt latch that then attach to the "LINK" system for child safety seats. I put the seat back pretty far in the tub so there would be more leg room for passengers vs more storage space behind. Though there is still enough space to put some necessities.

This site (MasterCraft Safety®:) has great products. There are 2-3 companies make great seats. These would be the safest and most comfortable.

I'm keeping my stock jump seats for now cause my kids just ride once in a while on very short trips (soccer or the store) I love the space when they are folded up.

I would think the question boils down to how often you have passengers in the rear.

The side mounted fold down seats are probably best for those who carry few passengers. That's my situation. My FJ40 is more like a two seater that's used from time to time with extra passengers.

If passengers are often carried in the rear, then it's going to be more comfortable for them to be in a crossways seat. But generally they have to get in by folding a front seat, and this can be awkward for some people. Especially with a roll bar or cage in the way.

No crossways seat it going to carry as many people as the early long side folding seats. I've had as many as six teenagers in my FJ40, two up front and four in the rear seats.

Bestop fold and tumble in mine.................good seat!

I have this same set up and while I will eventually want to go back to jump seats they work great for kids.

I think @WoodyCreature 's connfer seat looks best but I couldn't find one.

I bought the bestop fold and tumble seat. It works and looks good enough. It was least expensive from amazon. I drilled holes in the floor and used 3/16" plate as a long washer with grade 8 bolts and nuts.

I only have lap belts- I'd prefer some 3 point belts but I don't have a good solution for mounting the shoulder point.

I'm sure something could be mounted on the roll bar but I don't know how safe it would be.

The jump seats are easier to access but the forward facing bench is more comfy for passengers on longer runs, that said I have my rig set up for both.

ita all up to you and your use and needs for the truck i like the jump seats because they fold up and we can haul our gear at the mud bogs and the 40 will get us around the trails if 1 of the big trucks needs some help

Stupid question but has anyone mounted a bench seat facing backwards like the old caprice wagons had? Would be kinda cool for passengers when youre topless and maybe easier for them to get into through the rear.

This is the Bestop 39440-01 TrailMax II Fold and Tumble Black referenced above. It squeezes right between the wheel wells. CCOT sells one with a custom prop stick that can be used to keep it folded while you're driving, or it can be had from multiple other sellers.
