I'm putting an '87 2F (from an FJ60) into my 1967 FJ40. I have a 4 speed transmission and transfer case from an '84 FJ60.
I've been told by a shop that I have to replace the stock clutch master cylinder (from my '67 FJ). And that I have to replace it with a newer clutch master cylinder - and to accommodate the master cylinder I have to cut out my pedals and bolt in newer pedals.
Some guidance here would be appreciated...

Never hear that one before. Tell the shop to install your F engine flywheel and old clutch system right down to the arm in the bellhousing. Then your good with your old hydraulic system. Have they mentioned you will be losing your hand brake with the split transfer case. Those required pieces not used in the US. Have to be sourced else where or moved to the rear axle to stay a stock type setup. I sourced one off an Australian market troopy and might be able to locate another one.

The shop doesn't know what they are talking about, unless you are putting a later FJ40 or FJ60 bell housing on, which only allows for a passenger side slave.

DI the shop tell what they were doing for the rear motor mount? Four speed with a split transfer case had one of these to replace the motor mounts on the bellhousing.

The earlier four speeds used the bellhousing like your three speed uses. The 60 series bellhousing does not have the threaded holes for the motor mounts. So to use the old style motor mounts a earlier four speed bellhousing needs to be purchased.

Perhaps you misunderstood. Were you also asking about power brakes?

OTOH, I've heard some incredulous stories over the years. One venerable cruiser shop told one of my old customers he had to change his engine to a 2F if he wanted to run a 4speed because the bellhousings were not interchangeable.

I put a 2F, 4Speed and Split case in my 1968 FJ40. Its a pretty big project. This is a long thread but there is a lot of good info in it about doing the swap.

I went with the transmission cross-member from btb products - it fit like a glove. I think I have the brakes pretty much done ... just have a hose to re-do. I went through the whole Project Patina build -- very nice!! I'm not painting my rig either.
It's coming together pretty well - Mud guys are helping me through because I'm pretty ignorant.
I'm doing my best, waiting on the manifolds right now. The good news is that when it's done, it will be what I want. An amazing off road rig I can take into the desert and mountains. And I'll know every bolt, nut, wire and hose on the whole rig.

Awesome. Yeah. I totally trust my 40. I’ll drive it anywhere. It’s nice knowing it that well.

When I drove 1300 miles to the Roundup in '05, y'all were incredulous. Now you understand.

Yes and no.

Mechanically I do.

Iron butt though. That’s hard core. I’m too soft.

I'll be back in Las Vegas for several days next week and might stop by BTB. Would their crossmember work for my '71 FJ40? Currently it has a '76 2F and an H42/one-piece transfer case from a '78 FJ55. I'm planning on swapping out the transmission/transfer case with an H41 from an HJ47 mated to a split transfer case, with drum parking brake, from a BJ45. If it wouldn't be too expensive to buy and install a rear cross member, instead of hanging the combo off the back of the bellhousing, I'd go that route.

Is this what you bought?

JimC said in my build he would not worry a bit about running a split case off the bell housing mounts. I was too far into my setup when he told me that.
It would be easier to just hang it off the bellhousing. I'm not going to be doing a lot of hard-core wheeling, just the usual stuff around southern Utah and the San Juan Mountains in Colorado.

That’s the BTB cross member I used. Give them a call if you aren’t sure it will work on your rig.
Yup Riley - I’m keeping it and I’m making progress. The offers I had were way low. I became motivated when I realized I never wanted to part with it in the first place.

Years ago I asked the question about using the bellhousing motor mounts. Almost all said they wouldn't use the bellhousing with split transfer case. Since I planned on running a PTO I sourced a 4o series crossmember even before I had a transmission and split transfer case. Would be curious how close the BTB crossmember for a 60 series is to the 40 series. As I collected transmissions and transfer cases I got the crossmember to match. The HJ47 L brackets are different then the ones for the FJ40/BJ42. The FJ62 has riveted L brackets but I do have the center crossmember. At one time was thinking of using a A440F in my in my FJ45. Need to compare the FJ62 crossmember to the ones from the 40 series. I know you parted a FJ62. That crossmember might be a good start. All the ones Toyota used were wider than the one from BTB. But to be honest doubt the four speed and split transfer case can be much heavier then four speed, one piece transfer case, PTO and Fairey overdrive.:meh:
