Hey guys I need some help with an issue on my '86 2F.

I bought it from a guy around 8 months ago. I installed in about 4 months ago and it's run pretty well. Except on my leg of the 40 cross country I was having crazy amount of oil loss. Again the truck runs pretty well and didn't break down it just ate through oil. I mean it covered the passenger side of the engine bay.

I checked with the guy I bought it from and he didn't have issues like this with the engine. I checked his pictures of the engine in his truck before removal and there wasn't the same spray of oil on the pasdgenger side of the engine.

I know in need to do a compression test an leak down test.

Here's a pixture of the smoke coming out of the PCV. Also, there is way more smoke coming out of the valve cover when I remove the connecting tube between the air filter and the top of the valve cover.

I had similar problems. I found broken piston rings on all 6 pistons and skirts broken on 4 of them.

Cracked oil rings don't equal cracked compression rings for a compression test.

How do the spark plugs look?

You have a good plan. Do your compression test and leak down. Smoke/blow by can come from a couple of places. Primarily from your piston seals/rings and secondly you valve guides/seals. Happy hunting.

Thanks for the advice guys. I did a few things over the past few days.

1) reset timing using correct method. I forgot to remove the vacuum advance before.

2) adjusted the valves. I didn't think it was running poorly until after I drove the truck with the valves adjusted.

3) installed a new dipstick

4) received my complete engine gasket kit

5) blocked off the HIC vacuum line. This noticeably decreased the blow by coming out of the valve area

6) installed an OEM PCV and grommet

7) forgot to look at the spark plugs.

I still need to check those plugs but thankfully it's running much better now and doesn't have nearly as much blow by coming out of the valve cover. I know this doesn't solve the issue but it's a step in the right direction.

Also, vacuum is at a consistent 17 while idling and then when you give it gas and then let off it goes from 0 to about 19 or so. This seems consistent with another articles information about having worn rings.

I'll continue to update this thread as I work through this more. And yes...I'll report the findings of the plugs, compression test, and leak down.

I am in the same boat, I have oil in my air cleaner/carb.

Going to check PCV tomorrow, my truck is as de smogged as it can get. I foul plugs very quickly and smokey exhaust.

I will also check the compression as well, I am really hoping its nothing to do with the bottom end but I am already assuming the worst.
