Many thank yous
I layered structural rated ply with dimensional lumber so the corners and high stress areas have 3 layers of lumber with atleast one of each kind. Then a buttload of Titebond number 3 with screws to give clamping force for the glue.

I have caught air dozens of time with jt and wheeled a good 1k miles offroad at least. Most of it very tame loam farm roads. Done a few hard core ones though, like Wheeler Lake, which is pushing it for a GX on 34s with open diffs.

The first 18 months with it the truck smelled like a lumber yard, which was a serious plus.

It can fit a 33" spare with the 2nd row in and all the way back and minimal recliner on the backs. I have it set for 35s. And it has one further drilling for 37s.

No kids and the only one who regularly goes wheeling with me is my dog.

The new dr kdss rear fixed link says it'll allow this tire size to fit. For $250 and allow this capability, along with the suspension upgrades is very competitive imo vs a swing out.
  • Provides clearance to run up to a 285/70/17 spare tire in the factory location

So 285/70/17 - 32.7" (with KDSS spacers and a 4runner hitch) fits, but 255/80/17 33.1" does not fit with KDSS spacers and a curt hitch. Now we just need someone to test a true 33" with spacers and a 4runner hitch...

I wonder if this works with class IV. Would be amazing.

BFG KO tires are notoriously small for the size for anyone else wondering....my 285/70R17 Nokian Outpost nAT won't fit even without the hitch mount
With a 33 its not even close. Build a tire cubby or put it on the door.

Been running a JW offroad tire carrier for a while now, just wanted to let people know since that BFG KO2 is kind of misleading, it's nowhere near an actual 33" tire

I did a test fit with a 33x10.5 MTR and it was over an inch too big. Nowhere close. I have a base model with no hitch.

I appreciate this info. Didn’t know this existed.
I sent him a question. Asked If this would work with stock suspension. If so, sold. Tried ever which way to cram a 32.6” (265) under there today. No dice. At stock height that bar needs to drop a good amount.

He says it should work even on stock suspension to fit a 33. I’m going to have to order it.

Edit: maybe. Looking closer that may not be ideal. Would make my sway bar below the axle tubes. My spare also wants to rest on the fat part of the “tire stopper” piece welded to the crossmember vs the thin higher part. 2” may not be enough still.

Is it even OK to have the tire ABOVE the sway bar? I would assume since the right side arm is a fixed length, at least that side cannot compress really?

EDIT: It worked. 265/70r18 (32.6") inflated, on stock suspension.

Also rocking a 285/70R17 Nokian Outpost nAT tire in my spare area. I had to switch to a 5th gen 4runner hitch. Before that, even when I removed the Curt 5k GX 460 hitch it didn't fit because of the Lexus mounting plate protruding into the spare well area. The 4Runner hitch mounts directly on the frame crossmember and provides an extra 1/4" to 1/2" of clearance. I'm also running Dr. KDSS sway bar drop spacers. My Nokian tires are all almost brand new with about 3k miles on them (I rotate the spare as well). When measured they are 32.6" even though Nokian says they should be 32.8" in diameter. The spare is also fully inflated.

Do you have any rear lift? Curious if my tire will still fit if I add a lift.
Also that 4Runner hitch...I assume you had to trim the bumper valance? Do you have to remove the bumper to install it or just the valance trim piece?

Yeah, I think I'm at 2.5" of lift in the rear, I did have to trim the bumper valance to use the 4runner hitch but I installed it without removing the bumper cover. It was a pain in the butt because I have large hands, use a ratcheting long reach flex head wrench.

255/80/17 Toyo Open Country R/T Trail deflated to 15 PSI
Curt hitch
Ironman KDSS spacers

Tried angling it down towards the front, down toward the back, slotting it in at every angle conceivable

Not a chance in hell

I dont see KDSS spacers on yours.
Maybe it would fit with the spacers?
