255/80/17 Toyo Open Country R/T Trail deflated to 15 PSI
Curt hitch
Ironman KDSS spacers

Tried angling it down towards the front, down toward the back, slotting it in at every angle conceivable

Not a chance in hell

Argh. Thanks @Roody

So puzzled now. How did that guy make it work? Does the curt hitch look the same as his “4runner hitch”?

Shoot, well thanks for trying.

From what I gather your 255s should maybe be larger in diameter than a 285/70/17, so it might just be that bit of extra right in the middle that stops it.

.
It might just be a geometry problem with my specific setup, maybe it'll work better for someone else
I had the same results with the same size. I think a 255/75R17 is probably thr biggest to clear, if it was deflated and cinched to the bumper a bit, to give the sway bar room to move.

I too have been wanting to get a 33 up under there… I have spacers and the curt 3 receiver and it wasn’t even close. I thought it might work without the receiver but I need one for occasional towing.

This 4 runner receiver looks like an interesting idea. Anyone know the PN?

I got the 33's on yesterday and decided I would just put the spare up top on the roof rack, as needed. Went for a drive w/ 4 tires and the spare w/ TPMS being at home caused a non-reading error on all tires :\

Would also LOVE to fit the 33s under, but - not seeing it happen. I might try, today, but honestly, looked like only 1/2" in their room with the old stock size to me, with lines up with 32s.

I have a 2016, no hitch, Icon Stage 3, KDSS spacers and 285/70 Wildpeak AT3's. The 285 would not fit inflated. I ran the numbers and a 275/70 is less than 2% difference in diameter. So I went with the 275 for the spare. It fits fine and allows articulation of the sway bar. The diffs are Torsen and do allow some slip, so I feel the 275 would be ok to use in an emergency situation. I put the new 275 up against the used 285's and they looked identical.

Thanks @Blain - it's really odd to hear so many differing experiences from 460 owners and 285/70/17 sized spares.

A 275/70 might be a good compromise if I can't find a worn down 285 as a spare.

any tricks? what is the clearance on the rear sway bar?
Had my mechanic do it as he had a spare 4runner hitch for me and was installing a bunch of DrKDSS geometry fix parts at the same time. Clearance below

Did you by chance measure the diameter of the tire? Not all tires measure at their designated size on the side wall.
No - I did not approach the exercise with that level of detail. I do intend to run this used spare through a few cycles of 5 tire rotation to wear it down a little more and allow more clearance with the swaybar, so will try and remember to measure then. It's a C load 285/70/17 AT3

Good info. Lots of folks don't require a Class IV hitch or any at all.

If a better replacement tow vehicle comes along I may look at this option for the GX. 33's would be nice but I only have so much garage/driveway space. So another vehicle may come with the next home. No cheap way out of this one.
