One of my major gripes with the 460 platform is it's inability to accept even a 33" tire in the stock underbody spare location like the 4Runners and other Toyota SUVs.

I've gone back and forth for years on a tire carrier, door mounted spare etc and never pulled the trigger due to cost/hassle/CBF. I really would like to move to a 33" for the aesthetics and slightly improved clearance.

I recently came across this interesting post on FB - a 460 owner swapped his OEM hitch out for a 4Runner version - this allowed more clearance for a 285/70/17 33" tire (he's running a Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT in these photos with decent clearance on the hitch and KDSS side.

Showed my mechanic (ASE Lexus Master Tech and serious offroader himself) and he thinks this will pass muster when flexing on moderate trails offroad.

What says the Mud hivemind? My plan would be to upsize to 33" and source a half worn tire as a spare.

I have no hitch and was no where near fitting a 33.

That sway bar moves up and down with KDSS.

My full size spare is in a custom.made tire cubby.

So this is what clearance on both sides looks like on my 2013 currently looks like with the beefy OEM hitch and a 265/70/17 31.6” KO2…

Based on that I feel like this could work/fit.

I believe you can shuffle the 33” spare angled more towards the rear of the spare location once the smaller hitch is installed, too.

I played around with my 285/70/17 KO3s with the curt hitch and it wasn't even close. Looks like that person has KDSS spacers and I don't so maybe that makes a bigger difference than I thought.

You can always keep just mount your 33's, and keep can of inflation seal until you're 33's wear down, then take one and mount it underside.

I couldn't get a 33 to fit deflated with a ratchet strap cinching it to the bumper. It was no where near close. I am hitch-less.

@Hiluxforever what year model 460 do you have and do you have KDSS spacers?

Trying to understand why this fitment issue is the case across different owners

2015. Don't have spacers. But if the spacers allow fitment and allow you to slip the tire over it, the sway bar will contact the tire during articulation.

Yeah that was an initial concern... my mechanic seems to think it should work. Also to @r2m 's point, a worn out, lower treadlife 33" can alleviate this over time

Only one way to find out lol.

I was using a 33x10.5 MTR. I have since moved to bigger tread.

So I actually set out to give this a shot yesterday but ran into some trouble, the JWOffroad license plate mount is stuck...

It's basically a slip joint so one piece slides into the other but I'm getting nowhere. Tried a tow strap and even the winch. Let is soak in WD40 overnight so hopefully some luck today.

good thing you didn’t actually need to use your spare! if wd40 doesn’t work, pb blaster has worked well for me. stuff stinks so spray it outdoors.

Glad I found out this way and not on the trail haha

Edit: License plate mount is separated, will try to fit the tire under the truck tomorrow
