Okay i have some issues, with my 22re, the timing is way out a whack and it will not pass smog.

The car runs great at 15-18 degrees advanced timing, but then it wont pass smog because it is not set where it is supposed to be.

i take the timing back to where it is supposed to be 6* i believe, and then it does not have enough horsepower to move the dyno.

I changed the timing chain a while back, did i miss a tooth or did i put the distributor in wrong?

the smog guy said maybe it is the TPS because when he pulled a yellow plug that goes to my fender the timing mark did not change?

I am at a loss????

Help if you can or have any experience, working with the mechanically handicapped>

Thanks

I could say allooooot but I'm just gonna abbreviate,

Put everything back to where it is supposed to be factory, and hunt for something in the emissions.

If you do not have a check engine light on, I'd rule out an electrical problem. But stranger things have happened, so Jump the terminals and see if you get a code.

Do you by any chance have a cam in the motor?

Did you by any chance mean BTDC, when you said "advanced timing"?

Do you know how to set the timing? TE-E1 IIRC. It sets the timing w/o the altitude factored in by the computer.

How did it run as soon as you re-did the timing chain? And how long ago was it that you did it?

did you set ur marks to top center on ur timing chain sproket and the timing mark

Could you tell us what year your truck is? It makes a difference in what connector to jumper for the timing. The connector Hilux is talking about (TE-E1) is the rectangular, black Diagnostic connector on the fender. If you have an early 22RE there is a 2-pin yellow connector which has to be jumped. If the jumper is installed, and the timing doesn't change, the most likely cause is the TPS (can be out of adjustment).
Try searching for TPS adjustment procedure.

x2. Check the TPS adjustment. Also, I've seen TPS become sluggish and it might need replacement.
