Got bored today so I decided to do a detailed breakdown of a 89 22re throttle body. Going to post a little at a time so I don’t screw it up lol.

Here we a have a 89 22re throttle body I pulled off a truck in the wrecking yard.

This was 10x more dirty and carbon packed than shown above. This TB had a hard life.

First we are going to remove the TPS, dash pot and IAC valve. Any of these screws could be a pita so get crafty and avoid screwing up the hardware too bad. I used a hammer and screwdriver to punch of a few. Took the top off the IAC just to show you but it’s not necessary.

This is the most difficult part. Removing the butterfly. Those 2 little screws are in there really good. I’ve done 3 of these TBs and I had to drill them out of all 3. They are M3.5 x 60. Kind of odd ball. My local Ace does not carry these. I had to order them. Using a 5/64 bit, start from the back and punch dead center and slowly drill these out. Once through, use a T15 torx (size up or down) and drive the torx down into the 5/64 hole and run the screw out. It definitely takes some patience but it works. Use some penetrating oil in conjunction to help loosen it up.

Now remove your TPS flap. Note the dot is facing down. Then remove your throttle cable linkage and undo the spring. Now you can pull the butter fly out. Be careful not to gouge it up.

Note the dished lip is towards the top of the TB. Now you can carefully pull the butterfly shaft out. Take note how much wear there is. This particular TB had it rough. Take some 220 grit sandpaper and smooth out any grooves or imperfections on the shaft. Now remove your TB shaft seals. They are facing out. They are 15mm OD x 8.5MM ID x 4mm thick. Avx seals have these with a 8mm ID which is perfect if your shaft is worn excessively. Snugish fit but seams fine.

I always hated tutorials that simply said: assembly is reverse... well no sh*t lol. I’ll provide some helpful tips. Apply small amount of grease to inner lips of seals. Slip the first seal on 3/4 of the way down the shaft with the lip facing out. Install shaft until seal makes contact. Using a screwdriver, carefully push the seal in while pushing and rotating the shaft until seal is completely seated. Be careful not to pull back on the shaft to prevent the seal from unseating. Rotate shaft and insert butterfly into shaft accordingly so dished part is up and facing out towards inlet. Flip the TB around and install the other seal facing out until seated. Install TPS flap with dot down and flat side of nut facing down. Install throttle cable mechanism and tps using m4 button head allens.

Nice job, great info.

I would not even attempt to work on that without a proper JIS screwdriver. A JIS bit in an impact driver sounds like a bad idea, but it really can pop those screws out really well, as long as you take a pick and clean out any gunk down inside the "+" of the screw.

I would also dunk it in a bucket of carb cleaner, then a good marinate with Kroil on the threaded parts.

I'm pretty sure the 2 small screws on the butterfly are staked. Imagine what would happen if they came loose and got sucked into the engine...

Last thing one should do is polish the butterfly and shave down the butterfly screws so no air restrictions. I would love to find some button head allens so if anyone knows where I can get some M3.5x60 allens please let me know.

Yea, I was thinking about getting my impact screwdriver but couldn’t find it. If I was more patient I may have found a better way to get those pesky butterfly screws out but it worked out. I was thinking they must be locked in there some way but I was just going to use red locktite upon completion. I’m still not 100% satisfied with the standard Phillips screws so I’m waiting to apply anything.

Nice writeup Toast. What are your plans for this TB?

Great writeup thanks. I think before I try this I'll do it on a junkyard one. I know mine could use a rebuild. Regarding that interesting seal (The last pic in the second set) is that still available as a new part?

M3.5x60??!! That is a long screw. Do you have the length right?

Lol! My fault. M3.5 x .60. The .60 is the thread pitch. Not like there’s multiple thread pitches for a 3.5 screw...

The length should be around 6-7mm

@coryc85, not sure yet. Might keep it, might sell it. You need one?

@Mashr, those TB shafts seals are not sold separately through Toyota. That’s why I had to find them elsewhere.
