well if you suspect air leak, smoke test it.

but when you have a vacuum leak the idle goes high

Only if the leak is going to the intake manifold. If it's on the intake hose it'll just run like crud....

Back at it

I'm still fighting this gremlin. So today I pulled out the compression tester. Results:

No1: 180
No2: 195
No3: 170
No4: 180

What was good is I think I can rule out head gasket.

What was not good was the condition of the No4 plug. It was melted. I'm suspecting a lean condition, which I have been suspecting all along. Now, why?

Injector not putting out enough fuel?

We are thinking the same. My guess is either that or a leaking intake gasket. I have rebuilt injectors ordered and will order the gaskets from CDan tomorrow.

I pulled the intake off yesterday. The runners were very clean, and almost looked washed. No gunk build-up as one expects. I noticed after removing the plenum that there were pools of fuel in the bottom of the No1 and No3 runners.

The manifold was removed down to the cylinder head. Manifold-to-cylinder head gasket replaced. Replaced the little elbow coolant hose under the manifold that would be a PITA otherwise. Also replaced the two coolant hoses to the throttle body, one of which can be a PITA with the manifolds in place. Cleaned things up a bit. It looked like the injector on No3 was leaking externally as well.

I took the injectors to a local shop for inspection and cleaning. I also have a second set of rebuilt injectors on the way in case these are no good. I bought all new o-rings, insulators and seals from Toyota (in addition to the coolant hoses). The insulators on the bottom of the injectors were not in good shape (not OEM), but the o-rings and seals looked good. Don't matter, all will be replaced. I'll pick up the injectors on Monday ($20/ea in case folks want to know).

Just for ducks I also replaced the semi-circle plugs at either end of the cylinder head, and the gasket to the rocker arm cover. I have 120K on this engine so I guess it's about time.

Gotta get my baby running right.

Back at it. Picked up the cleaned injectors yesterday. Went home, installed them, buttoned everything up, turned the key. CRAP!

Had a pronounced miss. Thank goodness for headers. Made the dx easy. No1 tube ice cold, not firing. Had spark. No fuel. Into the harness I go. It appears in the process of removing the manifold I aggravated a brewing problem. Same issue that DavidW had. Corroded grounds. Broke the wire off the splice. The signal wires had been repaired before, and you should have seen how that was handled. What a F'n mess. NOT MY WORK!

So, for now it's repaired, but not fixed. I'll order new injector connectors and when I have time pull the harness out of the truck and fix it right. Gotta love old junk. :o

There is a reason I started with a factory fresh harness on my 2FE.
