I've been on the hunt for a 1st gen 4x4 (79-83) pickup and finally found one worth looking at in my area. Truck is a 79 longbed with 20R and 4 speed and with what looks to be 112K on the odometer. At some point it received a replacement bed and hood and was resprayed. Body is pretty straight with only 2 areas of rust that are of any concern. There are some mechanical/interior issues, but none that seem too big. I really like the truck.

I'm not a mechanic, but the engine sounds normal with no smoking or rough idling. It has a weber carb. I drove it on a highway that had some hills that really didn't seem like much.

Going up these slight hills it just seemed like there should have been more power. I mean it's not like a couldn't make the hill, but it just seemed to hold 55-60 I had the pedal down pretty far. Truck was running 3k rpm at 55. I don't have any compression numbers on the engine and I don't have any reference to go by as this is my first 20R to drive.

Is this normal and what is expected powerwise? I mean it seemed ok powerwise in lower gears.

When brand spanking new, that engine put out a whopping 90 hp and 122 lb ft of torque. The Weber might add a little more power if tuned correctly, but 40 years has likely taken at least that much away again. If the truck is in good enough shape for the money, and drives ok for a 40 year old vehicle, I’d not worry too much on the power level. Being able to hold 55-60 on a hill at all is good for that engine.

Post pics if you buy it...

Sounds normal to me. Larger than stock tires will suck some power away. OTOH, they would lower RPM at 55-60. 3K is OK though at 55. Assuming you're not among the 99% of drivers in a hurry on the highway, it should be just fine.

Pics, indeed!

I had a 20R in my 1980 and it had plenty of power. I took it up some steep hills and it still wanted to keep going. But that was with 5.29 gearing too.

With stock gearing and bigger tires, that sounds normal to me.

Thank you for the responses. From your replies, it sounds like it's normal. Truck is running stock size tires and stock gearing.

20R, L43 4spd, stock H78/15 tires and 55mph should equal 3100 rpm. So, sounds like it's 'right'. Best engine mod I did to my '80 was a Downey header.
