One of the guys at TFL made a good point today. With the Land Cruiser confirmed coming back to the US, and it probably moving down market from where it was previously, there may be a good chance that the next 4Runner will be repositioned as a Wrangler/Bronco competitor.
The scoop from insiders on the 4runner forum is the new Land Cruiser will be targeted at the Bronco Badlands and Jeep Rubicon level models, it will be revealed this fall. The 4Runner will continue as a new, evolutionary 6th gen model, it will be revealed this Winter/Spring 2024.

4Runner vs Wrangler/Bronco makes a lot more sense. There is no way they are going to take the Land Cruiser nameplate down market of 4Runner. I suspect the Land Cruiser will probably be a Toyota version of the GX550 with different sheet metal and more rugged. I think the LC will be targeted as an Tourer/Overlander while 4Runner makes a lot more sense as a Wrangler/Bronco fighter. But time will tell.

I haven’t been on any 4R message boards in a while but this is pretty much what Carmaker over at Club Lex has shared as well. That guy has been on the money and quick to say otherwise if he is on the receiving end of some bad info.

I have no idea what the 4Runner would be then if it is not targeted at the Bronco and Wrangler. No way it is going upmarket of the Land Cruiser. That would be a huge reversal on 40+ years of positioning the Land Cruiser as the halo SUV for Toyota. Makes no sense whatsoever.

If Toyota wants to throw away the Land Cruiser reputation they would be better off using it to replace the stupid "Trailhunter" name.

Maybe the 4Runner will return to it's roots, more like a pickup truck with a removable topper/shell. Who remembers?

It’s going to be an evolution of the 5th gen. Same as each gen before it. To me the 4R is kind of like Toyota’s Swiss Army Knife vehicle.

LC for better or worse is going to be the name plate of their new off road focused vehicle. It sounds like they will end up being priced the same as from what I’ve heard regarding the LC it won’t be a luxxed out wagon anymore over here, it’s going to be ruggedized and utilitarian with a priced ceiling of around $65k.

Think of it like how Jeep has the Grand Cherokee positioned next to the Wrangler Rubicon. Both can be had in the $60k price range but both have different missions. Except in this comparison I’d take the 4R over the Grand Cherokee since it will be BOF and not Unibody.

So the Land Cruiser is going to be the new FJ Cruiser but hopefully better? They would be better off just bringing out an new and improved FJ Cruiser instead of devaluing the Land Cruiser name.

That’s what it sounds like. I’m not in charge lol. If I was I’d of brought the 300 over and offered a base, lux, and GR spec. Same as the rest of the world. I think the Sequoia sucks and that is the only thing over here that would interfere with a full fat 300 series IMO.

I’ll pack a tape measure
The small pickup Toyota enthusiasts and car enthusiasts have been asking for. Tacoma is too big now. I'd love for them to return the 4Runner to its roots.

Like a Stout pickup? :D

The 4Runner brand is already very well established in North America so I too think it continues as before with the Land Cruiser name being for that something new, IF it happens.

If I'm not mistaken, the 4R is for the North American market only. I've followed reports that corporate finds the 4R to be the black sheep of the family; thereby, causing consternation because it continues to sell well no matter how much they want it to go away.

Taking a wild swag, the next gen Prado will be sold in the states under the LC nameplate as it's relatively affordable and provides both luxury and off-roading without breaking the bank (unlike the LC200/300s where were pushing close to 85-100k depending).

4R is sold in many countries of South America as well

”As of 2021, the 4Runner is marketed in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela.”

Chile:

Not just trails but city streets, parking lots, garages, etc. Is anyone doing 470 resto mods yet?!?
Nori Green 2023 460 with a Prado conversion would be nice :)

There are still clean 470s out there, but far less than 2-3 years ago! Mine has a OEM+ build theme.

Don't get me wrong 4Runners are great and still very popular, but wasting the Land Cruiser name on what is, essentially, a new FJ Cruiser would just be stupid marketing. The Land Cruiser names does mean something even in NA. At the end of the day it is the product that is built that is more important than what they call it. But if Toyota wants a modern FJ40 to compete against Wranglers and Broncos just call it an FJ Cruiser for goodness sake.

BTW, Land Cruiser is happening. Toyota has confirmed it on social media.

While I would love to see the 70 series, I agree with most of the folks that the LC will be GX based and the 4Runner will return to its 2.4 4 banger roots like the Tacoma.

I’m interested in these reports if you have any sources? I did read on some forum/blog posts that Toyota had at one point (when sales were slumping) planned on discontinuing both the 4Runner and the GX both in North America. Then sales started picking up again around 2017+ and they began planning redesigns instead for each of them not long after.

When Toyota redid most of their cars with more "emotional" designs, it did help sales. Granted I actually like the look of the early 5th gen, but absolutely love the later design, if it looks like a veloster turbo.
