Photo shops are looking better..the rear tail gate is a 70/30 split, which I find it hard for them to carry that over to the LC250 and not the GX550. I would love the old split gate on the 550 but not seeing it happen.
Does anyone have some insight on why the split tailgate was removed from the 300? If it was a cost cutting exercise it seems like it would be such a minor one to not matter in the grand scheme of things. The split gate is one of the LC’s signature features and a fan favorite. Just seems like a bad decision to take it away for the 300. We know the GX550 will just have a lift gate, I imagine that’s all the LC250 gets as well.

One reason, Soccer Moms

Watch them bring it back in a future generation and talk about how they are bringing back LC heritage.

On a serious note, it is probably cost cutting for sure, in addition to the fact that the closest rival to the LC200 the Y62 patrol didn't have a split tailgate and it was selling really well, so they figured why not.

They also didn't offer a barn door option on the 300, or a factory rear spare tire carrier option like they used to for the past few generations.

Sometimes this happens sadly, benchmarking a rival doesn't always mean they benchmark for the better.
Sometimes they see what they can get away with removing by seeing what the rival product is offering, and if it is affecting sales or if the buyers even care.

I am sure many people do care and want the split tailgate back, but unless enough people actually complain about it, I wonder if they will actually bring it back in a future generation.

This happened with the front locker that made a comeback with the 300, you could argue, is it even a necessary thing to bring back with crawl and all these systems? But they did and supposedly its because some owners specifically asked for it.

Same for LC300 pretty much staying the same size and not growing, ( infact in some measurements the interior has even less space than the 200 ) supposedly its because one of the most common feedback they got from owners was not to increase the size from the 200.

Watch the opposite happen now when they start developing the 400, most are going to say the 300 was too small make it bigger.

Another thing worth mentioning, they seem to have been really serious about weight loss in the LC300 program, because again one of the most complaints they got about the LC200 was it felt too heavy. So maybe the loss of split tailgate factored into that? They really didn't spare anything to try and make it as light as they could given the Toyota QDR standards.

You know what's interesting though, they still offer a factory winch option on the LC300! Optional only on the 1GR version but even that option probably wont' last more than a few model years at best. So yes, you do see some contradictions sometimes but also something going away doesn't always mean it won't make a comeback in a future generation.

Does the LC300 have an extended range fuel tank in any trims/models? If so - where did the put the fuel tank? I think that's one of the trickiest issues with a rear hatch. Hatches and rear tire mounts don't play well together. I know they exist, but they all kinda suck to have to move the tire out of the way before opening a hatch. Much easier to put it on the door. I suppose it's possible to have a very heavy set of door lift struts to lift a tire on the door, but then you run into height issues with many garages among other problems. But where else do you put it? Or is the long range fuel tank a goner?

Yes
110L
Smaller than LC200 which was around 126L I think.

The world's tiniest muffler :) It's great that it's so compact to fit an aux fuel tank next to it. Pretty efficient use of space overall. I guess no need for the rear mount tire.

110L is probably plenty for most normal use - especially in the diesel models. I don't think I'd ever need more. Or if so it would be extremely rare. My current Tundra has 143L and even getting pretty poor mpg it still has enough range for all but the most unusual situations. The 22 gallon tank in my 4Runner was not enough at times, but I never needed more than an extra 10 gallons of spare fuel. So, 30 gallons would be great. I'm sure the USA version will only get the regular tank - :(

Manufacturers squeeze their pennies hard. People want power tailgates that you can open by kicking under the bumper. With a split tailgate, that means two motors instead of one, plus something to sequence them properly. That's more money and how many sales would they lose without a split tailgate?

I prefer the split tailgate, but that isn't a make-or-break feature for me.

Edited to add: one advantage of a liftgate over a split tailgate is that you can get closer to a heavy object, so easier to load and unload. Personally, a barn-door like on the GX460 is a break it for me -- I hate them.

I'm the opposite. The split tail gate gives me a workbench when I'm out in the field. I also dislike how the rubber door gasket can be nicked or cut with the traditional lift gate. I like how the split gate slides out a piece of hard plastic to protect the rubber gasket...really wish they had saved that.

Agreed. The split gate is probably my favorite single feature on my LCs. Truck super muddy? No problem, open it up and instantly clean seating area.

Wasn't sure what thread to put this in, but fresh off the press release this morning
