2017 Land Cruiser - Transmission Needs Replaced

Interesting. As for the issue of reverse to drive and that "boinging" sound and the brief traction light-my 2015 does the same thing if I try to go too fast from reverse to drive.

Try keeping your foot on the brake, shift to drive, wait a second and then go. It won't do it if you follow those steps. I know the manual actually spells out this process as well for shifting gears, hope that helps.

I have a 2013 lx. A couple of times. I have I have shifted from reverse to drive while the truck has been rolling and not completely stopped. It has made a sound. I am use to driving a manual so I have never heard this noise. I assume the noise is normal in the lx.

Toyota plays a much bigger game than IH8MUD. They see all the data and swapping the transmission makes sense from where they sit. I would go with the flow and swap. We will never hear the real story.

Similar issue happened to me. My new 2018 LC went into some sort of limp mode at 7,500 miles where it would not shift upwards or drive > 20 mph. The dealership diagnosed multiple failed solenoids and found metal fragments in the transmission fluid. Toyota replaced the transmission and so far I’ve had no further issues - I’m at 15,000 miles (7500 on the new tranny).

My 2017 landcruser which I bought brand new got a new transmission at 7500 miles. Toyota extended my warranty and I was ok with that. It took almost a month in the shop to repair.

That repair took a lot longer than mine. I was back on the road in 4 days though Toyota did not offer me an extended warranty.

Really hope they are not putting a sedan transmission in a truck. The LC has always had a transmission dedicated to their trucks. The ZF 8 speed (if that's what it is) is in everything.
Totally agree with your logic, these newfangled 8/10 speed transmissions are only about one thing, fuel economy. More parts, more complexity, more shifting is going to equal more problems. I personally wouldn't have one. 2015 is the last year for the 200 as far as I'm concerned.

I have a 2016 and it is the only LC I have ever owned. I do NOT have the TSB 0209-17 installed. I however do like my 8 speed very much. I tow in 6th as recommend pulling on occasion a 3500lb boat for fishing. In 8th I can run 90mph at just over 2000rpm and get 17.2mpg (assuming no head wind). I hoping the issue listed with 8 speed are just fluke to a few transmission. I am currently at 38K miles and hope to run this thing till at least 2036.

Had one of those G37's fun eh? Also love that T100

My wife had a 2010 C300 that we just replaced earlier this year. It had a 7-speed automatic transmission. Mercedes durability isn't in the same league as Toyota, but that transmission was perfect throughout the life of that car. She now has a new C300 with a 9-speed transmission -- too earlier to judge, but no issues with the transmission so far.

If Toyota had put Apple CarPlay in the 2020 model, I would have traded in my 2013 and not worried at all about the 8-speed transmission.

I agree with all this and had about come to the same conclusion regarding the 16+, especially after driving one and it seemed to be shifting ALL the time which was just plain annoying. Personally I think the 6 speed is perfect for the 3UR-FE.

But Ive broken down and really want a Blue Onyx Pearl on Terra when our 13 gets old. Will run it in Sport mode with PWR mode ON to keep it from shifting up too high! And hope they had sorted out any tranny issues by that model year. Love the front end, interior, etc.... Probably go for an 18 without the rear screens. Will have to get some Rock Warriors of course...... ahhhh, I digress

More speeds is just a dick measuring contest. I am surprised Toyota stooped to the level of the idiots at the big 3 American manufacturers.

Honda did the same for some of their models. For example the Acura TLX has 8 and 9 speed transmissions. Lots of reported problems and failures. I'd stick with the tried and true 5-6 speeds.

I'm pretty sure they're being forced to by government mandate. Auto manufacturers are no longer free to make decisions regarding their own products, it they were, I'm sure we would be seeing different things from Toyota. Environmentalists in California are calling the shots. Doesn't bode well for the future I'm afraid.....Sadly.

Interesting corollary going on over in Honda Odyssey land. They have a 9 speed and 10 speed in the latest model and the 9 speeds are all failing at around 70k miles. People are rightfully pissed. We just bought a 2020 elite which has a 10 speed. Brought up the issue with the 9 speed while negotiating a long warranty extension and got over half off.

Maybe maybe not. Lexus has had an 8 speed in the LC 500 for some time, and that's a butter-smooth transmission dealing with a heavy car and often aggressive driving styles. ZF 8 speeds are everywhere - from the new Supra to Jeep Wranglers. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive.

I've got an F-150 with a 10 speed in it, and 30k miles in (mostly towing through the Rockies) and it has so far been flawless. Time will tell if it holds up, but not only has it been great so far, the truck easily gets low-to-mid 20's with hwy MPG (not towing of course.) That's pretty badass IMO on a truck that can tow nearly 13,000 pounds.

It's easy to forget that people were bitching about 6-speed transmissions when they came out too. I remember it seeming like a "gee whiz" feature in a car to have a 6-speed auto and now that tends to be on the low end.

I went to the dealership and was able to talk to the shop foreman. He explained that their diagnostics found the torque converter clutch solenoid had failed. They called Toyota asking if they really should tear the transmission apart to replace that solenoid. Toyota told them not to and they would be sending a new transmission. I'm not knowledgeable about any of this, does it sound correct?

There was another issue I'd asked them to look at but understandably their main concern thus far was the transmission. When shifting to drive and correcting the wheel after reversing (in either direction) I would hear a spring noise bouncing underneath the drivers floorboard. It sounds exactly like a spring that bound up then popped loose and is bouncing around, think "boooiinngggg". You can feel the spring hitting the underside of the drivers floorboard. When this happens the traction control light would briefly flash on/off. It happened 10 times since I got the truck. All different times of day, and always after shifting to drive from reverse and below 5-10 mph. Any ideas?

Thanks for all the help thus far!

Same exact thing happens in mine...

I've only read positive reviews of the ZF 8-speed.

For all of you guys clamoring for the 6 speed, I will say that I wish Toyota had taller gearing in 2 and 3. When I'm pulling my trailer and I've got my '13 floored if I run the tach out when it goes to second I can clear tell the engine is outside the power band for a few hundred rpm. 2-3 and 3-4 are fine. Honestly I'd rather have the 8 speed, but not everyone is nearing the GWVR
