Bet you haven't. They are never finished and the truck will evolve for as long as you own it.

Oh, and my 1985 on 33":

Have fun with your new truck. The Gen1 4Runners are as good as they get.

Mine was also an 85 (SR5), on 35's!
Loved it.

Good luck with your new project:cheers:

yeah its gonna be a great build and i cant wait. Love your trucks btw badass!
this what im thinking....
Lift... never really seen anything about ball joint spacers so im looking into that.... anyone have any experience or old yota wisdom? ...its between that and maybe Super lift, Pro comp, or Blazeland long arm. only downfall is it runs at like $1000..

Gears... well i know nothing about gearing

Exhaust... new headers and a magnaflow kit

Rear locker... either an aussie locker or an ARB air locker if i could find a used one in good enough condition i could fix up.

Armor...well gonna build my own sliders and maybe get a marlin rear tube bumper and im still looking for a good front bumper.

feel free to offer your thoughts!.....im new to this game so go easy!

Well, the ball joint spacers are just a suggestion, but would get you to 33's easily and very affordably.

For gears, to match 33's I'd go with 4.88s to match the 5spd and still give you some top end, but if you go to 35's I'd go 5.29s.

Exhaust, definitely do a cat-back, but unless you are gonna do a lot of motor work, a header is going to be a waste from what I read. Guy called engnbldr (Ted) on 4x4wire has forgotten more about the 22R than most of us will ever know, and he did a really good write-up about getting usable power out of these motors. Your call but I would put the header down on the list for now. He makes some killer cams and some nice heads too. I have some of his stuff now and will be doing a head and cam for my pickup someday.

Locker, IMO I would do selectable if you want to street it much, otherwise Aussie would be good option.

Armor is really preference, I want plate front and rear with tube accents and for the sliders. Marlin makes good stuff, but so do a lot of other folks, so that one I'm not going to offer any more opinion on.

Look forward to seeing a pic of you next to it. Stay safe and thanks again for all you do.

Oh and I hate you solid axle frame havers....:p 33s and a solid axle, that is what I want for my DD, but without the huge wheel well gaps to fill that most SAS leave you with. Darn Toyota, actually the American public and their need for ride quality and California for all their stupid emissions....

Back for more!!

Well I opened this thread back up because it’s finally time to start working! To all the guys who offered their advice before thanks again! I’m back and working to slowly rebuild my 4runner and make it a sweet truck for me and my new family!

Got an 87 4runner 265k miles I think, but runs great I have a list of things that have been done to it that ill post up later but just kind of looking for a few things....

Bikini top - seen some stuff about CJ8 tops being used curious if anyone has done this themselves

Sliders has original ones on it but I don’t really want to destroy those, might try to make my own unless anyone knows where I could get some cheap

Locker- saving up for an arb locker for the rear

Big thing though I’m looking for is some really really tough paint... I’m trying to find some military stuff but it’s hard even when you work here hahaha

Interior I’m thinking about taking the carpet out I don’t know how often people do this but I feel like there are going to be allot of gaps under there that the carpet kind of hides.

And does anyone know if there is like a swing open tire carrier that I could put on a SB tube bumper? Or is it going to be something I’m going to have to just make?

Thanks again post pics in a sec

Those are running boards, not sliders. I would not put any kind of a load under those.

Good choice. Love mine.

Have no fear. Pull it out. The only surprises you should find is extra change.

Make it.

Welcome home. Great looking foundation to start with. I've had a 4" trial master lift for years on my 86. I've had an 82 with a straight axle. Loved them both for different reasons. It depends on what you want to do with it. IFS for blasting through the desert. SAS for rock climbing. I've been contemplating an engine swap as well. I was considering the 3.4l. But after some research I like the idea of the taco 2.7L. An easier swap and enough power to justify the effort. After mods, I'm sure you can it up to 170hp without using a torch. A taco/3rd gen 4runner axle has an e-locker available to if you want to keep things yota. Have fun, and don't body lift it please.

X2 Welcome Home. May sound odd but I was looking at my friends list the other day and was wondering when you might be making it back state-side.

That is a great looking 4runner.

As mentioned above those are the factory running boards and they won't offer much protection for the rockers. They should come off with a few bolts rather easily.

ARB for the rear is an excellent choice. I am thinking of doing the same in my 88 when the time comes.

Interior is in excellent shape and you scored the factory inclinometer (sp?). There will be some misc. humps and gaps that the carpet does hide. I got a set of Husky liners in mine and they do a good job of protecting the carpet.

On the rear tire swing out, CBI offroad is working on a DIY kit for a rear bumper. They have a DIY rear bumper kit now but the website doesn't list any ETA on the swingout kit. Luke over a 4x4labs sells swing out kits also that you might could make work. You could email him and see if any of them will work on your bumper. He seems like a pretty good guy and has some pretty neat stuff.

Again, Welcome home and thanks again for your service.

Matthew

First of all, thank you for your service

And secondly, nice truck, that's a good find.

Bikini top - seen some stuff about CJ8 tops being used curious if anyone has done this themselves

I've never heard about the CJ8 tops, but I used an FJ40 top from BestTop for my brother's 4Runner. Wabfab sells a kit which a lot of people have used, we made our own bracketry out of a piece of 1" aluminum. It worked fine, but it would be nice to have the support bow from the wabfab kit.

Locker- saving up for an arb locker for the rear
ARB is a great option. I put an Aussie in the rear of my '88 and I'm happy with with. I think I'll go ARB in the front if I can ever afford it.

Interior I’m thinking about taking the carpet out I don’t know how often people do this but I feel like there are going to be allot of gaps under there that the carpet kind of hides.
My carpet was disgusting, I ripped it all out and bedlined it. I want to get a vinyl floor kit for it because I'm putting down sound deadener so I need to cover it with something.

Good luck, you are starting with a great platform. Wish I had the SR5 to start with.

Im gonna look into the spacers and for now looks like ill just paint it i got some ideas in mind to try and make it my own.
Im definently going with the ARB just gonna wait for the right time

For the top im gonna try and look into the 40 tops

and the carpet came out and it looks great under it but ill post some pics of the changes after i work on it a bit more just a few more changes

yeah i love this truck best thing ive ever got in my life!

nice score. i to just got a ifs 4runnerl mines a 86 this is the lift im gonna get old man emu 2 and a half inch springs for the rear
http://www.sierraexpeditions.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1319

and old man emu torsion barsl i figure i will run the 1 inch ball joint spacers along with the torsions and just adjust it till the front match the rear springs and i wont have to crank the bars as much with the balljoint spacers. cant remember wich set is for the 4 runner on this link but if u email them they contact u back pretty quick
http://www.sierraexpeditions.com/index.php?l=product_list&c=139
so far they got the ome stuff the cheapest i can find.
