Also,

A quick and cheap upgrade would be to repaint those wheels to stock grey!

Ahhhh i'd love a bikini top David!!! That'd be awesome!!! I plan on wire brushing the wheels and painting them grey. Thanks for the offer for the diff fluid, I baselined all of them the other day with Amsoil 90wt gear oil, and got it at a good price cause I know this dealer who hooks me up :) I probbably will need some wire brush help at some point, underneath is daunting, but worth it I believe.....

Great, I'll put your name on the top! I am a firm believer in taking care of the underside first as it gives you confidence in what you have as you build up. I also have a stack of red poly body bushings that I've never used. I'll fish around in Bin 14 for them.

Somebody asked for engine pics.....I decided to paint the rad and air cleaner after wire wheeling it, now you can actually see the air cleaner info on there!!

Here's the bad rust in the tub... We decided to "band aid" the hole due to it's location, and my lack of funds for a better tub at this time, with some spare parts 16g plate. We started by cutting out the rusted thru parts, and having the plate bent to fit directly in the tub. We ended today welding it in, but alas as I was busy wire wheeling the seat bracket I didn't get any pics of the welds. We are starting early tomorrow to grind the welds and prime it. I will get pics tomorrow. Note the second pic, you can see my foot thru the hole in the tub.....

Jay,

In the words of Fred Flintstone, YABA DABA DO!

How much is a new tub and would it be cheaper than patching?
I saw my local restorer put a new tub on a jeep and then I saw the old tub he took off sitting behind the shop. It was a good call in that case . . . . Have you done the "bondo" test by draging a magnet around the tub to see how much metal you have left?

Then again, if you are able to shape and weld in 16 gauge, you may well be on the path to restoring what you have. I found it incredibly useful to put my 40 up on a lift when removing rust from the underside. The hardest part otherwise was laying on my back all day.

Man... you got a lift!!! I need one of those like bad!!! I have not priced out a tub yet, there is a guy in Murphy who has TONS of 40 parts according to 1972FJ40, so I am trying to locate him. I do have some bondo in the front fender, but I may just replace both of them as well. I need rocker panels and well pretty much a new body except the bonnet and fender skirts. I think I need the rest though. I just wanted to put the steel in the floor so it'd be mobile, and keep me motivated to work and I wouldn't fall thru the floor at some point. You gonna be at the smoke shop saturday? If so I may bring it up...... (as long as it isn't raining)

I was able to use a friend's lift on a saturday when his shop was closed. Also, back in the 80s, there use to be these shops you could rent by the day with a lift and an air source. I guess these no longer exist.

I plan on coming by the shop saturday and will bring the bikini top and anything else I can find. (I have about 8 quarts of carquest full synthetic AT fluid if you need it for one of your AT trucks).

I've seen the guy in murphy, I think he has a shop along US 64 on the East side of town. You may want to keep a look out for a "donor truck" with a great body but dead drivetrain. (Sounds like my first girl friend)

Tub Found!

I don't know if it will fit, but RK has a '74 Tub in Roxboro for sale right now "98% rust free". $800 clams asking price. Here is a link: https://forum.ih8mud.com/parting-out/316159-73-fj40-nc.html

I think Marshall has bought stuff from RK and might have some insight. Paging Trollhole . . .

His name is Greg Greg! ?

You should have kept the 60, you would have had the complete family. :) Looks like a good base. Keep up the good work.

Awesome!! Marshall you rock, not many who can diagnose an electrical problem over the phone!!!

Edit....
Well Greg Greg either didn't pay his phone bill, or changed his number. Anyone remember where the shop was located? Thought I might just take a drive down to the NOC, and while I was down that way see if he was still out there. Any help is appreciated.....

Is'nt his shop on the left on Hwy 64 coming into Murphy from NOC? Usually a red FJ45 for something sitting out front.

Jay, it was great seeing your new toy this morning. Really think this is a diamond in the rough and with some luck on replacement parts, you could be riding in style.

Here are some phone numbers in the attached pictures I took in Murphy last GSMTR, I think one of them may be Greg. Sweet 71 sitting downtown in Murphy for sale that year.

Yeah, spoke to Ray out of Athens, GA and his stuff is $$$$, but once home I removed the rear step and tire carrier (ripped is more like it) I used the cutting wheel a bit, but they came off. I PM'd R.K. to see if he would work with me, so we'll see where that goes. Otherwise I might figure how to get the rear crossmember off w/o killing myself and getting something put where the frame used to be.....

Jay,

Post up in the For Sale/Wanted on the main board a request for 12 inches . . . of frame from a @ 75. :D My guess is that someone has a frame out there that is headed for the scrap yard and could mail you the piece of frame with the spring hanger (If if Fits It Ships!) for about $10.

BTW anyone else know where a tub might be??? Somebody, if you see one, please let me know, I need one ASAP
