If I understand you correctly you're toying with having the painter paint all the pieces of the roof separately... then you'd assemble the roof? Not sure that's gonna work out so well. When you go to assemble the painted pieces you're gonna end up damaging the paint job in areas. You want it assembled, the rain gutter filled, and then painted as a monolithic unit.

👆 I'm going to have to agree with Honger on this one. The truck in pieces? For sure. The top in pieces? I don't think so.

Hmmm ok roger that.

I would let the painter choose his primer. That way if there is an issue he can’t fault your choice of primer or your metal preparation.

@Michael B - what about repairing the fiberglass? I was going to let the painter do that part. It is really thin and has a lot of pinholes in it throughout, and has a really heavy coat of old PO paint on it in the dark red. It needs some care and attention. Can he do that adequately with the rail on it?

Perhaps I should let him repair, assemble and paint (though I'm leery that he will assemble it to my high standards)....

I've removed 75% of the old paint. I could do the rest and then lay some new epoxy on it... Learn to do fiberglass repair too. Why not, I've learned so many skills already. Then he could do the final sanding and painting.

Thoughts?

I would ask him about the fiberglass work. Not all paint and body guts are good with glass. I would install the the gutter before I delivered the top for paint. I would also play 20 questions with him about the sealer type and application to ensure you’re both on the same page.

Been working on the steering wheel. Using @Birdhead ’s techniques (plus a lot of time and money) I did get a very good result. We will see if it holds up to time.

If you get a silver star you can @Vae Victus .

What paint and/or topcoat did you use?

I realize that I have fallen into the "I've been doing this for so long I don't post updates very often" club. There is progress so I will try to provide a few updates.

Most importantly- paint is mostly done (top and small parts still in paint):

Put some shrinkable electrical tubing on the wire loom clips.

I really want to thank you for convincing me to make the hoses Ive sold over 500 since that first group buy of 20.
Lou
By the way, I just had to move my hose yesterday. I had it hooked to the two DRAIN ports, not the fill ports. A friend pointed that out to me. Doh! I was wondering why the fill levels were wrong between the tranny and trxfr. Just hadn't noodled it our quite yet when he said it was wrong.

Anxious to see people comment on the paint color. SO I'll be first:

I've hated that color for years. Now that I've seen it new and in person, the job is so well done, the finished product should really look great. A splash of it in the upholstery should top it off nicely.
