I have an oil leak and I think I have it narrowed down. The first leak looks like it is coming from the O ring on the distributor. The main oil leak looks like it is coming from this large screw that is in the front of the upper oil pan. I have a pic shown here. My FSM does not show this in it and I called Toyota and they "think" they see what I am talking about but they say there is no gasket required for this screw. I am not sure what it is used for since I can not find it in my FSM. I am wondering if anyone else has a clue how to seal this from leaking. This is one the upper oil pan and looks like it feeds into the power steering drive gear cavity. Any idea how to seal it? Is there a gasket required? Any other area you can think of that would cause this oil to gather at this point?
Thanks

I would bet it's not that screw leaking, but rather, the oil pump seal directly above it. I just replaced mine, along with the crank seal & distributor o-ring a little while ago. Parts were relatively inexpensive.

Oil pump seal? Crap! I did not see anything up above it that was leaking. Can you replace the seals you are talking about without removing the cover?

Yep that is pretty much what mine looked like. Didn't have the time so had my indy replace the oil pump cover and the front pulley seal. You're right there to do them both. Might as well.

All is tight and right now !!

This link was very helpful. Just when you think it is going to be an easy fix...

Well I am going to be rebuilding my power steering pump and putting in my new power steering cooler so this would be the perfect time to do everything else since they are all right there at the same place.

Thanks again!!
Tony

I thought it was that damn plug that was leaking. I replaced the seal on the oil pump cover and it needed it but this plug is still leaking. It does not cost much to replace once I got the part numbers. The guys at the stealership parts counter said there was no replacement part for that or a gasket but the parts guy in the garage printed out the exploded view and gave me the part numbers.

And Don't you LOVE the Toyota advertising machine that claims that 80% of all
Toyota sold in the last 20 years are still on the road because of the dealers service department...

Bad example I know, but the typical dealer parts department isn't too bright and heaven forbid if you don't know the VIN number.... (Typical doesn't include that place in NM either...)

Definitly oil seal mine looks like that as well, mine does not drip on driveway yet so I am to lazy to pull it apart.

I have the exact same leak, always a drop of oil on the bottom of the big hex plug on the front of the main oil pan. The FSM mentions the gasket but nothing about FIPG. Wondering if we should add some FIPG, or could stray FIPG get sucked into the pump so maybe that's why they don't mention using it there??

This big hex plug is where mine is leaking after the oil pump seal was replaced. Fortunately this is an easy fix and only cost me $11 and some change.

This place cracks me up. The Mud system works uncannily well and this thread is a perfect example. I've got that exact same leak from the hex plug and I think the crank position sensor on the bottom of the oil pan a few inches aft of it is also seeping above it. I just asked LandTank what that plug is because it's not mentioned in the FSM. That was - what 2pm PST today?? Then this thread pops up. Wow.

So Tony - what's the part number of the seal for that hex plug? I need 2 of them and what I'm going to do is fix the hex plug after I fix the crank position sensor leak with LandTank's fix. That will provide some good data as to which was the bulk of the leak as it's impossible to tell due to their proximity and the fan airflow.

Some of you know I recently trashed my main oil pan which was just replaced . I had that leak up front same as in the photo above before and still have it after the new oil pan was installed, the drip under the hex plug showed up by the time I got home from the dealer. Reason I mention it is cause I'm thinking at least in my rig it is not the gasket at the hex plug that is leaking; I think that plug comes installed with a new pan. Trivia; that plug when removed is a straight shot into the oil pick-up tube/strainer where it bolts up to the inside wall of the main pan. A machinist who cleaned up a used pan for me said the hex plug could have been put there to plug up a hole used to drill out the large oil passageway going between the pick up tube to the oil pump in the original casting?? IDK.

If you put a used pan on the truck, wouldn't the possibility that the hex plug is leaking still be there? From age?

I too always have a drip hanging from the hex plug. I've done the dizzy o-ring, front crank seal, and oil pump seal. The drip is still always there. I was thinking it might be from a leak somewhere in the power steering box seals or lines? The few ocassional drip I get in the driveway is not engine oil, but rather (appears to be) power steering fluid...

I will post part numbers once I get these parts in my hands and verify they are the correct ones. There was a discrepancy at the stealership as they told me the part number, I went to the parts counter and the numbers listed came up to some screw and gasket on the head. I went back to the mechanic and he printed out an exploded view of this area with part numbers which were the same as the ones they looked up before. So I took a risk and ordered them. I do not want to post a number that is incorrect.

Now once I get them I have no idea what to torque it down to because the FSM does not even show this part that I can find. DOes anyone know? Cdan maybe?

The part numbers for my 93 FZJ80 is as follows

90341-27006 Plug
90430-27005 Gasket

Could I have gotten away with not buying the plug and just the gasket, probably but for the price I figured I would rather do it once than twice.

Here is the exploded view the mechanic gave me. NOBODY at the stealership could give me a torque spec. I suck and usually tighten too tight unless I have something to control me. :p

I was fighting with a PS pump leak and was getting ready to swap pumps when I noticed drips forming on the pump and realized that the supply line was leaking where it bolts to the pump, I removed it and there is an O-ring that was rock hard like the rest of the seals on my '94.. I am hoping I can get the O-ring alone if not at the dealer at a parts house . Thanks for the other info guys.

Tony,

So do you have the part in your hands? You posted the p/n's so am I OK assuming you have them and it's what you expected as to the part?
