Hi Guys,

I have been a member for a while, but this is the first time I have posted, so please bear with me. I have been building an engine for my 96 FZJ-80. Long story short, my machine shop trashed the oil idler gear bearing. :bang: I have read through all of the post that I could find on the subject and it looks like I am not the first to suffer this mistake. I have not been able to source this part anywhere! There was mention in one post of a "Guy in Houston" that was making them. Does anybody have his contact information or any other helpful information. I can't believe that there isn't an aftermarket solution to this yet. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Alan

Welcome!

The shop doing your rebuild should be able make you a new one. It's just a bronze bushing. the shop I use here for all of my machine work doesn't even bother to remove them anymore when they tank the blocks, they just make another.

I don't have any engines over there right now, but I'll check and see if they have the specs.

I called my machinist and he can make some bushings next week. These are made from Naval brass which has a 40% zinc content and is superior to the factory ones. I don't have a price on them as it will be time and materials.

Last time I did this I had a tool made to extract the factory bushing and then used to guide in the new one in. I lent it out to a mud member who hasn't returned it. I won't be doing this again and anyone buying a bushing is on there own as far as replacing it.

Of course, if I do end up getting my tool back it will be come available for people to use.

Rick:

What price point are we looking at for these bushings?

Thanks.

Not sure. The last time it was one for me and one for the other member and I don't remember what the bushing alone was as he needed a pump drive gear as well.

This machinist is retired and kind of shoots from the hip on pricing. He's going to track time and material this time around so I can get a hard price on these.

Oil pump idler gear bearing

I thought about machining a bushing out of bronze, but the original is a layered bearing with steel, copper & babbitt. My concern is, that babbitt will flow and give if the gear wants to not sit perfectly centered. I am not so sure that the bronze would be so forgiving. My thinking is that Toyota engineered it with babbitt for a reason, I just don't know the reason. The people that have had these made, were they all bronze or did some come in babbitt? Thank you again for any tips.

I've already posted the material that was used on mine. But like anything, simply saying brass or bronze really doesn't amount to anything. You need to know the specific type and not all variations are equal.

Regardless of why Toyota did what they did or why they chose to do it that way you will not find that anywhere from what I have been told.

So for a replacement you are stuck with what can be machined out of common stock.

First thing, that "guy in Houston" will not help you unless they do the complete engine rebuild...

Second, Landtank is the man when it comes to fabricating items that are needed on an 80, be it a one off or a small production run... I was going to have another shop machine a few bushings, 4 months later I looked for an alternative due to not having a bushing at all...

Third, here are some pictures on the removal/install of the bushing... I took the removal pictures awhile back when I received the tool, bushing, and idler gear but due to my headgasket blowing and a TDY I did not have time to post them... The install pictures are kinda dark due to getting off work later than normal yesterday. Enjoy: Pictures by JamesD- - Photobucket

I had two bushings made and they are ready to be picked up. One is for me and the other is for avalenti if he wants it.

The cost of the bushings are 105.00 plus 15.00 S&H. They will go out via USPS so if you want more than one only pay the S&H once as these are small and light and the box that I'll use for one will actually hold more.

As far as the tool goes it's on it's way back and as far as I'm concerned it can be a free loaner for those who would like to use it. You will be responsible for shipping costs both ways and the tool itself. If the tool is lost, stolen or damaged it will not be replaced. It is made out of aluminum and precisely machined so it needs to be taken care of and handled accordingly.

My paypal address is landtank@comcast.net. Turn around will be volume dependent as these are individually done and the larger the order the longer the last people will have to wait to see the product. Shipping will be on a first pay first ship basis.

I'll be placing the order on Oct 9th for those who have paid by then.

Sorry for the previous post, I just found this post. I need a bearing, and a loaner tool would be great. Any chance that I can get a bearing made? Any comments as to how this worked out for others would be great. Thanks.

Thanks. I found some dimensions, but it said they were for a used bearing. Also, it concerns me that it has two oiling grooves. These dimensions are from a post by Photoman.

“Oil pump bushing – 1.211 long
1.301-1.3025 O.S.
1.1795- 1.182 I.S.
.056-.064 wall thickness

Bushing oil hole .310-.321 diameter YX
.497 outside of bushing to outside diameter of hole (not hole center)
.392 outside of bushing to outside of hole from other end

bushing oil pump hole in block 1.287 diameter”

If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it. I don’t mind purchasing a bearing if someone has one already fabricated.

have you guys had any trouble with these home made bearings? Did you put the oil grooves on the inside? Did it effect the performance of the part? My concern is that, with this being the oil pump, and a total pain in the ass to get to... if it fails, it's going to junk the engine or at least be a nightmare to fix..

Edit: Found this online.. Anybody know of a better option?

These are the bushing s that I have made up. Still made out of naval brass and has all the oil grooves present in the stock bushing . I'm not aware of a single issue with the exception of a customer not cleaning the shaft of the gear before assembling .

That shaft can accumulate some transfer which will interfear with the bushing .I take some 800 grit emery with alcohol and remove any transfer. Also when installing the gear prep the bearing with oil and use a rotating motion as you insert it . That will reduce the chance of the shaft sticking from miss alignment. The tolerances are quite close
