Builds 1995 80 series build- a rolling black hole where money disappears

Having had it both ways, rotating the drier makes approximately zero difference. I was really worried about it, but so far it's been just fine. That's a brand new drier that I installed when I had the engine out.

I agree the 91-93 setup would be preferable- however this works just fine for me.
So far is the key word. the dryer can't do it job in that position.
I'm happy that it's working for you

I'll keep an eye on it for sure. I vacuumed the system for 2 hours before I recharged it with refrigerant so it should be pretty moisture free.
If I have to swap to the earlier style I will. I think it'll be ok tho.
I've got lots of automotive AC experience and have moved driers on several vehicles without issue. Time will tell.

To be clear- you're right- it should be oriented vertically for max efficiency.

Well, a month or so into my rebuild, and it appears I have an oil leak at the cylinder head. I thought it was just the valve cover- maybe the rubber seal had a nick in it or something. I pulled the valve cover, cleaned everything really well and installed a new valve cover gasket. One road test later...and the wetness on the head reappeared. It's on the passenger side above the exhaust manifold, about cylinder 5.

Closer inspection with a mirror after another cleaning reveals a small crack in the head 🤬

Crap.

Stitching pins to fix maybe?
I think im going to try a 3M aviation sealant. They make a product just for this, and I've heard nothing but good things about it. For all I know its just JB Weld in a $100 applicator, but if it works...

The only right way to fix this is a new head, and I really don't want to do that just yet. It is running so well, I hate to have to take it back apart. I also can't live with an oil leak...if I wanted that I’d have bought a Harley!

You could do the stitch pins in situ

Just a thought. Had a crack in my block at freeze plug at #4 cylinder and they work great.

Holy $hit that was an exhausting read but now my day is complete. I feel for ya dude, jeebus.

Thanks man. It'll get fixed one way or another!

Spent today painting and installing new Marlin Crawler tie rod/drag link and new 555 tie rod ends.

I have a 2025 tundra in the driveway and enjoy this old 80 more for some dumb reason.

It's great to have a supporting wife👍🏾. Hopefully both of our 80s will meet each other.

keep us posted on how things evolve with this.

While I continue to be pessimistic about the magic mooky I smeared on the cylinder head, it continues to keep oil where it belongs. So far, its a win.

On to the next project! Last week a few of us locals paid a visit to Aleksy over in Sacramento, and picked up some parts we all needed. I grabbed a rust-free rear hatch (without spoiler holes!) for my 80, as mine is rotting out from the inside. Spent some time stripping it down to just the sheetmetal, and it'll go to the body shop next week for paint. I bought all new seals and gaskets for it, and will need to pick the best of the two rear windows I have here to transfer in.

I was shocked I was able to remove the interior trim pieces without them vaporizing. With a little persuasion from a heat gun and some patience they all came off intact. Some further effort with an eraser wheel in the drill made short work of cleaning up the 3M tape that held them in place all these years. That wheel had zero effect on the outer emblem tape residue though. It seems the PO used a combination of epoxy and gorilla glue over that tape to try and affix the "LAND CRUISER" name plate. I'll let the body shop knock that off when they prep for paint. I have a new emblem and name plate ready to rock

Rear hatch is at the body shop, and today I paid a visit to 4x4 Labs to bring home the bumper my wife ordered for me for Christmas. Hope to get it installed on Sunday 😎

When I arrived at Luke's shop it was still warm from the oven curing the powder coat!

Productive evening here!

The intent was to start on installing this bumper this morning...but a buddy called and his 2002 4Runner was dead and needed some love. Turns out the water pump bearing was shot and the timing belt jumped time. Spent a couple hours doing the tbelt, water pump, and idler/tensioners on that to get him going today, so I didn't start on the 80 until almost 6pm.

Got the bumper installed ok, need to get the rear winch installed and my backup camera moved tomorrow. Looks pretty good tho!
