So, a buddy called me two nights ago and asked me if I wanted his 1990 4Skinner for 1K. Now, that's about as much info as he gave me. I've never seen the truck, the dude is a serious crappy car collector, he (and the PO) smoked like chimneys, and my wife is not exactly Kosher with me getting any more projects. That being said, my youngest son turns 16 in September, and I am not positive I want to give him the 63 ragtop bug I have as a first car (It's his, but young men tend to play bumper cars and I'd rather have a bit more mass around him). My buddy pointed out that he replaced the fuel pump and sender but there was still a slight fuel leak in the engine compartment he has not located yet (EEK o_O)

I chatted with my wife about it that night. She was not excited, but she was okay with exploring the potential. She's a Toyota girl, and I love her for it (plus I just got her a Great Dane, so she owes me). The next morning I sent my buddy a text asking for pics. He replied "Tell you what, hook up your trailer and meet me at my house and it's your's for a dollar". Well heck, guess I'm in it now. I grabbed 1K cash (just in case he was joking), hooked up the trailer, grabbed my boys (in case someone had to push), put the winch on the trailer, and off we went.

When I got there he was rinsing about 10 years of tree s*** off the truck. He had purchased it from a coworker and hadn't put more than 2K on it over the last 10 years. It looked great! Both boys were excited.

The truck is beautiful.. 151 original miles.. 1990 SR5 with the 3.0/5 speed. Timing belt, all hoses and the clutch was done at 120K. Interior was VERY clean with a small tear in the drivers seat plastic. Tires are 30x9.50x15 BFG KO's and essentially full tread (but being replaced shortly. It has AC that doesn't currently work, but the PPO said he used to add a can a year and it worked perfectly. Sooo who knows.

I didn't even know these were an option.

The bad,
He hit the runner with a Buick and the runner hit another car. So I need a new front air dam and a bumper corner (and possibly more)

Been saying it since about 1989 ;)

Because the rest of it is so pretty ;)

Okay, 2 questions.. it had a small fuel leak that I think came from here:

What is the name of that part?

And, does anyone make a vac/heater hose kit or am I piecing it together?

Ohh yeah, I hope the boot between the airbox and the throttle body is still available. Cause mine's done....

So, when switching AC to 134a, Swap out the condenser?? Or reuse the stock one?

You should be fine re-using the stock one. Just make sure you replace the drier and the expansion valve & all o-rings while you have the system evacuated.

Don't you need to flush all the old PAG? I thought R12 used different PAG oil and you shouldn't mix them.

I have a habit of cleaning every A/C system once I open it before I do anything. I probably should've mentioned that - but yes you're right.

Make sure you clean out EVERYTHING before you put it back together and put new oil in the compressor and dryer. I use brake cleaner personally and then blow everything out with compressed air.

My intention is to clean it thoroughly, but the Toyota literature states that there is no need to get rid of the mimeral oil. Still gonna clean it. :meh:

Everyone I've done an AC conversion I pulled everything apart and flushed with brake clean. For the compressor I just turned it until it stopped spitting fluid out.

Thanks for this info @Mace I just might convert the FJ60 and my truck.
Congrats on the new project. I had a 91 and I miss it.

Same interior as mine! Neat to see what they look like stock.

Nice. The SR5 trucks with the 3.0 came stock with 31x10.50s in 1990. Does it have the OE rear tire carrier? Big win for a $1 or $1000...perfect first car.

Maxxis RAZR 33.10.50 will look perfect.

Tire is under the bed of the truck. Did they have an optional bumper tire carrier?
