1983 FJ60 Starter question

I was grabbing gas this weekend and hoped in the truck and turned the key and nothing. I checked the lights and had power. Hoped out and tapped the starter with a hammer and it started fine....Does this mean is it going out and I should change it as it will just get worse, or a fluke and I should wait?? Question 2- I called my local Toyota dealer (the one that did my gas tank recall with no problem by the way) and asked if they had them available for my truck and how much. He told me $134.37. When I asked him the part number he told me he doesn't give out part numbers. While I guess I understand he doesn't want to be shopped I would like to check him against what I am supposed to be ordering from another source. When I checked toyotapartsdeal.com they have a price of $210 (and I would have to pay shipping) and the part number they call out is: 1979-1983 Toyota Land Cruiser 2810060042

So, can someone tell me if that part number is correct? also, should I buy a new one or have mine rebuilt? was thinking I just buy one and then have this one rebuilt as a spare maybe......

Why not go to partsouq put your vin # in and then you can look up correct toyota parts for your truck. Then simply copy and paste the part number and search other toyota dealers online.

Thanks for the quick replies. So here are a few thoughts from the responses:

1. can I assume from running my VIN at partsouq that the OEM starter is no longer available and the dealer was quoting me an aftermarket brand X starter? Could he have been quoting me a reman starter with a core charge for $134??
2. My best route looks like ordering a reman from toyota parts deal and sending my old one back as a core once I get it.
3. I am not 100% sure the starter on my truck is even a Toyota starter, so if it is not I just keep toss it and the new starter cost me $91

Lastly, I have not thrown on a new starter before but it just appears to be a few bolts and an electrical connection. Anything else I need to know?

That’s not a Toyota starter but if it was you could rebuild the solenoid contacts yourself. Do you have an auto electrical repair shop in your area? I have one near me that will rebuild starters and alternators, etc. A by-product of a farming community.

Local Toyota dealership prices and online internet prices are two different universes. A local dealership will typically charge exorbitant prices.

Starter is super easy to remove and install.

Yeah, they’d likely only want a Toyota starter for a core return. Your starter looks different.

I would NOT go with toyotapartsdeal. Several including my self have been left in limbo after taking the order. Other toyota dealerships on line show 2810060090-84 as an OEM reman'd replacement part for your 2810060042 starter.

When I put your #2810060042 in the search this screen, it showed this replaces/supercedes the original part #.

starter install is as easy as it looks. one banana job.

That or it's a earlier, pre-gear reduction starter. I forget the transition year but some of the early FJ60s had the older starter.

To the OP, best to find a remanned gear reduction starter.

Did not know that. I figured my 82 starter had been replaced with something generic, it looked identical to the starter on my Ford 5000 tractor

As @g-man says, some folks have been having issues with Toyota Parts Deal lately - myself and a couple other local Cruiser people too. That's in addition to 2-3 other folks from social media and forums ... all in the past 4-6 weeks. I have had good experiences with Partsouq and Cruiser Outfitters. I also just ordered from Toyota Parts Prime last week for the first time. Everything was in stock and the package came equickly.

ok so I got a starter from my local dealer. It is the exact one that OSS posted pics of above. I have another dumb question. I installed the starter with the label facing up, so now the 2 connections are on the bottom verses the top. I am assuming this is correct and didn't even try it the other way, just assumed the smaller cylinder was supposed to piggy back the larger part as before. The difference is the connections are now at the bottom...Is this correct? I want to confirm before I connect up the battery and give her a go.

NVM....I realized what a dumb question that was after I thought about it for a while. The starter would spin the same way no matter which way I had it. Anyway, what a difference!!! actually sounds like a car starting rather than an 18 wheeler. Glad I swapped it before I got stranded.
