Restoring that 83 will eat up your wallet in a hurry. You may end up with a $50K Land Cruiser but you'll have way more in it by the time you're done, if it's done right.
More than anything talk of actual costs to restore/modify a cruiser a would help when someone is considering a purchase. I'm not naive enough to believe I'll ever get my money back but to have current real world numbers would be helpful. I prefer to go in eyes wide open.

doooooood- theres tons of cruisers out there.

imho- theres a HUGE difference between a stocker ( that you want to keep stock/ restore) and one thats a daily driver. If you are keeping it all orig for purposes of investment/ funding a childs college in 15-20yrs......you need to look for examples that are VERY different than ones you want to daily drive that has the creature comforts like efi- disc brakes- power steering- v8....etc. Unless you want to do all the work- you are better off searching for one with liveable rust (ie. will rust for 20more years) and whatever comforts for daily driving you will like/need.

this one sounds like a pass to me......so your instincts are probably spot on.

keep searchin!

When I said it is worth it - I didnt mean it necessarily mean monetarily. It's worth it bc its a NA spec 83 cruiser, a piece of history of sorts. The barrier to entry of a pristine 83 is still high. This would allow you to get one and fix it up slowly. In that case it MIGHT be a good return on investment but most likely not. If you are trying to make money there are alot of ways better than flipping cruisers right now. Prices of FJ40's are down bc of a number of factors, one of which includes the influx of cruisers from South America.

If you dont care about the year, there are plenty of good non rusty fj40's that show up on CA craigslist that are driveable right now.

I decided not purchase the 40. It was tough. I don't want a museum piece and that is what it deserves. Nice seller though. Someone needs to save this cruiser
