In one word: Awesome! You're absolutely doing the trip i'm dreaming about.
It looks like the troopie is treating you well. Excellent!

Maybe, in the far future i might ship over my own Cruiser and do a similar trip like you are doing right now.

Here's to you

Later,
Mark

That's just one of the many future trips planned for the Troopy. This one gave me a good idea of cargo area usage and other mods...

It helps that I'm in a profession where I have to go where there are no cell phones, email, etc. Otherwise my work follows me....

Mexico, as usual, is an amazing place filled with friendly folks!

Awesome.... we have to talk seats!

Here is my 84 Troopie HJ47. I bought her in Oct. 1996 and brought her to the States in 1997. I had the 2H turbo-charged in Melbourne, but I put a brand new Vortec 350 in her in 2000 and sold the turbo 2H. The Vortec runs the factory air con and power steering using the Chevy compressors, and the engine sits in front of the factory H55F 5 speed. I put 3.73 diffs in her in 1999. She sits at 2700 RPM at 80 MPH on the freeway. With the cruise set at 80 and the air con on, I average 21.5 MPG, which is about what I got with the turbo-charged 2H. I have 52 gollons of on board fuel, so the range is phenomenal. On the way to Glacier National Park 2 years ago, I filled her up in Santa Fe and made it to Rock Springs, Wy. before I filled up again. The interior is a camper, and I have 10 gallons of on board water. The seats are out of a 1995 SR5 4 Runner with a custom centre console. All of the rubber has been replaced, and all of the lights and switches are brand new. I can't think of a better rig for all-round use.

Cheers,
Josh

Life is strange...I had sold my RTT and awning/enclosure to a friend here in Flagstaff....

He's getting a new truck, so he doesn't need the tent/awning anymore...so...I'm buying it back...

so...added to the comfort factor is this setup!

Nice. Way to go A- I love the awning.

Adios Unleaded!

So, a milestone has been reached for the Troopy...

The plate I chose was an Alternative Fuel/Clean Air one since the Troopy is rigged to run off propane:

Well, as of this morning, she's walkin' the walk and talkin' the talk! Filled up the propane system and she's good to go! No more petrol exhaust!

:grinpimp:

I've noticed no apparent loss of power, and she runs smooth.....

Troopy

Great Job on the build-up. I just purchased my first Troopy (1980 HJ45) and it's due to be devliered on Thursday. Can't wait to get her here and start working on her. I'm sure when I get going I will have a lot of questions. I do know I will be looking at adding an air-conditioning unit. I have found some info on petro installs, but none for a diesel. Anybody try to install air on a diesel?

hltopper, how does lpg compare to petrol pricewise where you are? In Santa Fe it was slightly more expensive than petrol and the research I did sounded like consumption is about 20% more. Not to mention not convenient to get. So I dumped my lpg setup to run only petrol. :frown:

Would be nice to have clean burn, but not for that price difference and not with those 2 huge tanks hanging down underneath.

That's a beauty HJ45. Looks like you need to start your own thread to show it off. My troopy has aircon, but it's a chevy motor, so I can't help you with your diesel. I see HJ47s for sale with aircon, so it most not be that tricky, but I don't know how different the H is from the 2H. You also could check with Marv since he always has HJ-60 front halves, he may have the compressor brackets and bits you need.

I have AC in my Troopy. Pretty easy to do..

Wow! Nice Troopy!

Propane here is about $3.13/gallon, so about .20-.30 cents less per gallon than regular unleaded. I haven't had the opportunity to run mileage yet, but have heard that you get slightly less out of LPG...

I like the Alt-Fuel aspect of it, really regardless of total mileage. A big plus is no exhaust smell in the garage in the mornings when I start her up!

I have noticed that cold starts are a bit harder, meaning I've got to crank the motor for a bit more; but no problems so far....

Rear Seat & Propane Impressions...

I've finally, finally, had the opportunity to get the rear seat installed. If you guys will recall, I ordered a Bestop Trailmax fold and tumble rear seat for a Jeep, with the intent to use just the "fold" feature to allow for a sleeping platform or cargo loading.

Wil and Wendy at SierraExpeditions were great to deal with, and got me the seat (twice; the first one didn't have hardware from the factory...) so fast it was scary!

In locating the seat, I found that the original mounts which came with the seat were too low; only being about 4" from the floor. I wanted to add an additional bracket to raise the seat another 2-3", and allow for better adult leg room. For the most part, the rear seat will be a mount for the car seat for my daughter.

I had some 1x2" rectangular tubing cut and drilled to match the front mounts, and the same tubing cut at 3" lengths to raise the rear of the seat. All are bolted through the floor with large backing washers.

Here are some pics of the front brackets...from the front and rear. Yes, I kept it simple....

One lap belt is mounted for the rear seat. It's really too small for more than one, and all it will do for now is secure the car seat.

I'm looking at the rear seat off of a BJ70, a 70/30 folding bench, for when I need to convert to shoulder belts and larger, adult passengers....

Also, since I've been asked, here's a shot of the front adapter plate I made to fit the Bestop front seats to the factory Toyota mounting locations. As you can see, the seat bracket mounts inside of the factory captured nut; allowing for the slight (approx. 1") less width of the Bestop seats.

Now...my impressions on running propane.

I like it! Generally, the truck runs no differently on propane than on unleaded. It does like to start on the second crank of the starter when cold; however. I guess the propane just needs a little more time to prime the system....

Mileage may be a bit less.

Im starting to work on my 1982 HJ47 2H. Wondered if I could get some direction on where to get parts? Mostly engine parts but I am also looking for weather stripping for the roof. Thanks.

Dave

Thanks David...I'll likely run it on petrol a couple of times a week! It's still pretty cold here in Flagstaff, so the extra cranking time is kindof annoying....

Creature:

I think roof weather stripping for a Troopy is gonna be Spector Off Road's territory here in the US...

Many FJ45 world market vehicles are basically the same as US models, so most parts will work. Kurt at CruiserOutfitters, Mark's Off Road, Man-a-Fre etc. all have parts; new and used.

Also, don't forget CruiserDan at American Toyota in Albuquerque, NM and John Hocker at Sierra Vista Toyota in Sierra Vista, AZ.... both also on Mud...

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the info H! Im planning on making the troopy into my full time work truck with removable tool racks in the back. Removable so I can play in it too! I did look on SOR for weatherstripping. Looked like only FJ40 stuff but I'll give them a call. Will I need a lift to fit BFG 33's on?

Noticed your WMI sticker in the back window. Cheers from a fellow WFR.
