Could use some advice. I'm swapping out the door panels and this "vapor barrier" seems to be pretty shot. At a minimum, I'm going to rip it out. So, the real question is ... Is there any value in replacing this?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and opinions.

If you want to protect the door panels from water I would replace them.

There's posts for alternative plastic and the sticky stuff. Sorry, I don't have a link. I'm going to need to do mine eventually.

No worries. I think I can find the stuff. Just wasn't sure what it really did. I'll see what i can find. Thanks man!

And before you replace the film, clean out the bottom inside of the door, especially the little drain holes. Helps prevent rusting of the door itself.
Great advice! Looked in there and they're a little nasty. LOL

for the vapor barrier, some thick plastic roll will do

maybe some butyl rubber to stick it on

nothing special about it

Cool. Thanks. Definitely think some plastic that's thicker than what was in there would be good.

I think the bigger problem is going to be getting the velcro adhesive off the door. I've been using goof, a plastic putty knife, and soapy water, but it's just not working very well. It's starting to scrape paint off a bit. Any ideas?

While I was taking a break from adhesive removal, I started noticing this stuff breaking off (maybe crumbling off). I've some older LC's before, so I think I know what it is. However, I have a few questions.

Should I leave it alone until I decide to paint (no clue when that will be)?
Should I replace it now and leave it unpainted?
Any other options here?

Thanks.

JB

I would clean it up and replace it. I have heard lots of people using a shower curtain cut to fit. There is also a specific type of adhesive people use. I'll see if I can dig it up.

To remove the old stuff, try using diesel fuel.

oh...the gutter seal

is this truck left out in the weather?

if so, at least do the upward facing parts....tape off the roof and get to picking and sanding. then use some 3M self leveling gutter seal (many threads here on the topic)

all the other parts can be left to paint time
Got it. It's currently not left in the elements and when it is I have a cover for it.

If I put in the sealer, can I just leave it unpainted ??

I don't keep diesel sitting around right now. Maybe acetone? Mineral spirits?

Spent the afternoon working on these door panels and working on getting the adhesive residue off.

The Adhesive: So ... I tried gas, I tried Goof-Off, I tried mineral spirits, and I tried good old soap and water. In the end, I used a heat gun to heat up the adhesive and scrape the bulk of it off the doors. From there, I used Goof-Off to get as much of the residual off as possible. It's still not 100%, but it's a lot better than when I started. You will see in the pictures that a lot of paint was rubbed off in the process. I'm not sure if it was the process that caused the paint to come off or the paint job quality. There are other spots where the paint just flakes off, so it may just be a quality and age issue. Either way, it may be the universe's way of telling me to plan for a paint job. LOL

The Door Panels: I couldn't find any of the "rope caulk" locally, so I will be ordering some tonight and knock it out later this week. That being said, I couldn't wait to get these panels on the doors. I had seen them on ebay before and were recommended by another forum. So, I took the plunge and bought these. They took a while to get here, but they are by far some of the nicest reproductions I've seen for any vehicle. They are the perfect color and perfect pattern. They came with all new "clips" to attach it to the door. As you can see, my doors have been pre-drilled for speakers. So, I will work out a plan later to cut out the second half of the speaker opening without ruining the panels (may have to get a local interior shop to do it).

Anyhow ... Here come the pictures.

Finally moved back into my house and have some space and lighting to actually do a few things on the truck. I keep coming back to this suspension, as it's pretty rough. I took some better pics under there this morning and spent some time in my FSM. Unless someone can convince me otherwise, I think this is all original (minus rancho shocks). I also seem to have some kind of "panhard bar" but can't find anything about it. Can anyone confirm or deny this stuff is original?

Panhard Bar ??

I believe this is your panhard bar, I’ve also heard it referred to as a track bar before.
