Got the fly wheel inspection cover back on. I just used adhesive backed weatherstripping from the hardware store. Seemed to work well.

Finally got the gear reduction starter from @ToyotaMatt installed today. The one hour job took about three with multiple texts to Matt (thanks) and 45 minutes looking for a nut that I had dropped. I never heard it hit the floor so thought it was somewhere in the engine abyss. Found it about 15 feet away on the floor. Grr. Anyway, the starter works perfect and it’s fast! Matt’s kit makes it about as plug-and-play as you can get.
Installed some floor insulation mats that I got from CCOT. Fit is pretty good. We’ll see how it does with heat and sound. Got the old Toyota floor mat in. Still in pretty good shape.

Then I hopped in and drove it into town for the first time in 2 1/2 years. That was fun. 60° today so not even that cold.

Upcoming rust repair and paint on the top and doors is starting to give me anxiety….

that GIANT LOAF OF BREAD Starter original would most likely rotate approx 300-420 RPM's

that GR OEM one will turn over twice as fast

hence the reason you NO LONGER need that small B+ wire going to super charge your ignition coil

- i have to ASK , ?

@4.75 9/10th a gallon ?

did u break a BILL filling her up ?

also ............

this is your
OFFICAL T-TEN Reminder your CHEATING FATE by NOT replacing your OEM fuel filter and adding STA-BILL MARINE Grade fuel stabilizer

- i personally use SEA FOAM in the METAL CAN / 2-3 cans if my truck sat that long

that SH#T Works !

I replaced the fuel tank and all the rubber fuel lines. OEM fuel filter is fairly new as well. New gas. I have thought about trying seafoam though.

i just gave them to you ....

ANYTHING that comes in a METAL can in 2023 i seriously consider ,

i used it in my BOSTON WHALER , YAMAHA 175 2 stroke for over a DECADE

it's LIGIT in my world

I’ll second the use of Seafoam. Use it in all my carb‘d engines.
Also, when I swapped to a GR starter the difference was astonishing.

great thread!

Added seafoam the other day…going to try it for awhile. The next dry day I have I’m going to get it on the freeway and drive for an hour….with a chase truck of course. It hasn’t been driven more than just short local trips in over 20 years. Hoping to clean it out.

Yes! The starter is great!

Big update. I got a side mirror! Been driving it a fair amount and always get a little nervous when I see a police car. Now I’m legal I think. Toyota part from CCOT. Holes weren’t quite wide enough and had to drill one out a bit but no big deal.

Still have some seam sealing and painting underneath but I’ve been putting it off. I’ve been going through a period of low motivation. Doors and hard top stare at me from the corner of the shop. Will start the rust repair one of these days.

This project has been a series of ups and downs which I’m sure is normal. I’ll go through periods where I can’t wait to get out of bed and I’m out in the shop at 6 AM to other periods like now where I just don’t have the energy to do any work on it. I think maybe I will just drive it this summer and have a goal of finishing the rest by late fall.

Eric, I’ve always considered my rigs rolling works in progress, never truly finished. It’s better to think of it like painting the Golden Gate Bridge: as soon as you get to the end, it’s time to start over. If the rig gives you a break, well that’s your karma.😉

Thanks Mark. Wise words.

Finished the last of the seam sealing and paint underneath. Horrible job. Got a bit sloppy but I’m not bothered. Cleaned up the heat shields and skid plate and now I’m going to claim done! (“Done” is fluid). Now I can start the doors and hardtop with a clear head. All 4 doors are rotten at the bottom and a few holes to patch on the top. Getting there…

Clean up the air cleaner and put a new sticker on. Now I’m kind of wishing I hadn’t… a bit too shiny.

Started on the hard top rust repair. As always, as soon as I started cutting, more rust appeared. Ugh. I’m not much of a welder and trying to weld onto the old thin metal is a bear. Getting good at filling in holes with huge globs and grinding though!

Decided I need to make a push to get the top done. Got a couple coats of epoxy on today. It’s really hot here right now so planning on getting up at around five to shoot the seal coat and then color before it starts heating up tomorrow. Then the cap hopefully next week. Then I can start rust repair on the doors. Ready to be done with this project so it can just be part of the family and not “the project”. I’m ready for a new project but I think I will never ever ever again take on a full on restoration like this. Haha.
